Houston Nutt Fired: Twitter Reaction to Ole Miss' Firing of Failed Coach

Kyle VassaloNov 7, 2011

Ole Miss had lofty expectations for Houston Nutt when they anointed him head coach in 2008, but after wrecking the team he took over and producing a 2-7 season thus far, Ole Miss and Nutt have decided to part ways.

Getting waxed by teams like Vanderbilt and Kentucky make it clear that Ole Miss has become the whipping post of the SEC. While the firing was necessary, the $6 million dollar check owed to Nutt in severance pay that has to leave Ole Miss full of regret-- not that they are firing Nutt, but that they hired him in the first place.

John Pitts provided the funniest Tweet of the day on the subject, and one that I hope becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The Daily's Dan Wolken poses an interesting question from one of his followers. That could be an article within itself. The dollars per win at Ole Miss ratio for Nutt has to be staggering.

Not all fans see it that way though. Alumni Kevin Hodges speaks for the minority of "rational fans" and defends Nutt. While he is right, and it's not all Nutt's fault, the steady decline into irrelevancy is unacceptable, and he has to take on some blame.

Perhaps those who share Hodges' opinion will find refuge in the fact that Nutt isn't the only one who is being held accountable. When a team tanks as the Rebels have, multiple firings or "resignations" are in order.

Justin Hokanson of AuburnSports.com says Pete Boone is going to be out in 2012. It appears as though a cleaning of the house is in order.

Perhaps Nutt would be so kind as to invite Boone to swim in the piles of money he sucked from Ole Miss during his time there.

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette writer Wally Hall suggests the $6 million check may not be as cut and dry as it seems. The fact that the buyout is reportedly contingent upon anything should leave Ole Miss fans confident that it may be renegotiated.

It's no surprise that the Nutt isn't exactly a walking Rebels billboard. He's finishing out the season with all of his players and staff knowing he's out at the end of the season, which is awkward within itself. He's coaching for another job, though. Sticking it to a university he failed by instilling an atmosphere of indifference on his way out is not the answer.

Here's a tweet to really agitate people during the recession. Nutt hit the lotto, regardless of what his coaching career has ahead of him. If this tweet ends up holding true, and Nutt is in fact receiving even close to this sort of compensation, he should consider it a home run.

That's got to irk Ole Miss fans and jealous, poverty stricken people alike, but it makes it far easier to point to Nutt's shortcomings as a coach and pat Ole Miss on the back for parting ways with him by any means necessary.
