Bears vs. Eagles: Why Jay Culter Will Be Buried by Philadelphia Pass Rush

Ryan PhillipsNov 7, 2011

In tonight's Monday Night Football matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears, the Eagles will exploit Chicago's biggest flaw: its offensive line.

The Bears have allowed 21 sacks this season, and that number is remarkable only for the fact that it should be much, much higher. Quarterback Jay Cutler has been under near-constant duress, and his numbers have suffered as a result.

Through seven games this season, Cutler has completed 137-of-232 passes (59.1 percent) for 1,702 yards, with nine touchdowns and six interceptions. His quarterback rating of 84.0 ranks 17th in the NFL

On Monday night, the Bears will face a fierce Eagles defensive line that is part of a defensive unit that has racked up 22 sacks this season. The Eagles' defensive front is led by Jason Babin, who has 9.0 sacks already this year.

Babin is joined by Cullen Jenkins and his 5.0 sacks, while fellow defensive end Trent Cole has 4.0. Babin and Jenkins are both new additions this season who form the left side of a defensive line that has become one of the best in the NFL.

Against that defensive front and with a shaky offensive line of his own, Cutler will have to get rid of the ball quickly to avoid getting hammered repeatedly in tonight's game. He will also have to look for Matt Forte out of the backfield all night.

Forte is a big reason the Bears are 4-3, as he leads the NFL with 1,091 yards from scrimmage this season. Against the 3-4 Eagles, the running back out of Tulane will need to be at his best. If not, his quarterback could get buried.
