Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Why This Fight Will Be Best of the Trilogy
As Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez prepare to fight for a third time, boxing fans are hoping for a clear, definitive winner on Saturday inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
When the pair met in 2004, they fought to a draw. In the 2008 rematch, Pacquiao won by split decision. So it's easy to see why both camps are claiming victory in the previous encounters. Marquez is even using those results as motivation (via Reuters).
""Now it's time to shed doubt over who the best fighter is," Marquez said on a conference call Wednesday while wrapping up his training camp in Mexico. "I want to win this fight because I believe I won the first two fights.
"We are not the only ones saying that we won those first two fights. A lot of people out there, a lot of fans and a lot of the media, agree. So we will be ready and prepared."
"
Although both fights had some nice counterattacking from Marquez, which kept Pac-Man off balance, and that's no easy task, fans want to see somebody win without any controversy. Disputed verdicts only lead to more talking and less fighting.
Boxing has dealt with it's fair share of wacky endings lately. Most notably Floyd Mayweather's knockout of Victor Ortiz that was eventually overshadowed by Money's verbal war with analyst Larry Merchant.
Pacquiao has been training with his usual high-octane intensity and will likely head into the fight looking for a KO, even if he won't admit it to the media. He wants to end his feud with Marquez with no doubt that he's clearly the better boxer.
Another judges' decision won't accomplish that.
Pac-Man will also be looking to make a statement, through his actions instead of words, to Mayweather. While both camps have been pretending like they have the upper hand, the negotiations show otherwise with no apparent agreement on the horizon.
Since both men seem as motivated as ever, the third fight should have no trouble eclipsing the first two in offense, excitement and results. And in reality, that's all boxing fans are asking for after shelling out their hard-earned cash to buy the pay-per-view.
Plus, not many people are rooting for a fourth installment of Pac-Man vs. Dinamita.
