The Top 5 Silly Season Events

Justin RunionNov 7, 2011

"Silly season" is the name given to the events between the end of the Fall Series in October and the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in January.

The events are played on some of the nicest courses in the world and offer some truly monstrous purses.

Many benefit charities and other foundations, and they draw popular golfers from all over the world.

Let's take a look at the best events of the silly season.

No. 5: ADT Skills Challenge

1 of 5

The ADT Skills Challenge tests golfers' ability in driving distance, putting and other aspects of the short game.

In 2003, Mark McGwire beat out a field of professionals, making him the only amateur to win the event at that point. Dan Marion won alongside Jason Gore in 2006.

Annika Sorenstam is dusting off her golf clubs in time for the 2011 event, which will be her first tournament since retirement.

The event has failed to garner much attention with the world's top golfers, which is the reason it finds itself in the fifth spot on this list.

No. 4: Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge

2 of 5

Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge features members of the PGA, LPGA and Champions Tour, and each tour is pitted against the others for bragging rights.

Last year, the Champions Tour came out on top.

The tournament benefits the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption and will be held November 4th-8th.

No. 3: The PGA Grand Slam of Golf

3 of 5

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is a four-man tournament that features the winners of the four majors.

It is held at one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world, Port Royal Golf Course, and takes place over two days.

This year's winner, Keegan Bradley, was able to hold off charging Masters champ Charl Schwartzel to collect $1,000,000 in prize money.

Over the last several years, however, the tournament hasn't garnered much attention due to the fact that Tiger Woods refused to play when he won a major.

Personally, I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to spend a week in Bermuda.

No. 2: CIMB Asia Pacific Classic

4 of 5

The CIMB Asia Pacific Classic is a golf tournament co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the PGA Tour.

It is played at The Mines Resort & Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and it is the first event ever sanctioned by the PGA Tour in Southeast Asia.

In 2011, the field featured 48 players: 30 from the FedEx Cup standings, 10 from the Asian Tour's Order of Merit and eight sponsors' exemptions.

Bo Van Pelt took first place in this year's event.

No. 1: Chevron World Challenge

5 of 5

Year in and year out, Tiger Woods' tournament features one of the best fields, and it benefits the Tiger Woods foundation.

It is not an official money tournament on any professional tour, but it's recognized as an unofficial money event by the PGA Tour.

Since 2009, the event offers Official World Golf Ranking points.

The field features 18 players, including the current four major winners, the top 11 available from the Official World Golf Rankings, the defending champion and two special exemption players selected by the Tiger Woods Foundation.

It will be held the first week of December at Sherwood C.C. in California this year and will be televised by the Golf Channel.

First prize is $1.2 million, and last place is $140,000.

Woods usually donates his prize money to the Tiger Woods Foundation.
