BCS Rankings: 3 Reasons LSU vs. Alabama Rematch Would Be a Lousy Title Game
If you and I have one thing in common, it's that we both spent our Saturday nights watching the so-called "Game of the Century" showdown between LSU and Alabama.
As it turned out, it was more like a "Defensive Struggle of the Century." Neither the Tigers nor the Crimson Tide were able to do much offensively, and the game ultimately resulted in a 9-6 overtime win for LSU. Just like that, the Tigers cemented themselves as the No. 1 team in the country.
Lo and behold, Alabama fell just a single spot in the BCS rankings, as the updated standings for Week 11 were revealed to have Alabama at No. 3.
Upon seeing 'Bama at No. 3, everyone had the same thought: A rematch between the Tigers and Tide could very well be in store for the BCS National Championship Game.
Goodness, I hope not. Here are three reasons why.
Emphasis on "National" Championship
The point of the BCS title game is to determine once and for all who the best team in the country is. If we were to get a title game rematch between LSU and Alabama, we would merely be crowning a true SEC champion.
The title game should have a more national appeal than that. Instead of matching two teams from the same conference and the same region, it should match two teams from different conferences and different parts of the country. Last year's title bout between Oregon and Auburn was rather perfect in this regard.
In so many words, the title game needs to keep on as it's been keeping on, as we have yet to get a BCS National Championship Game that has consisted of two teams from the same conference. The BCS is a joke, but this is one example to show that it actually works. If nothing else, what we get each year is a matchup of different conference champions.
We wouldn't be getting that if LSU and Alabama clashed for the title.
My Thoughts Exactly Tweet:
The "Game of the Century" Kinda Sucked
I know, I know. It's juvenile to say that something "sucks" or that something "sucked." Moreover, this is an expression that has no place in a serious college football discussion (emphasis on "serious").
But let's face it. Saturday night's showdown did suck. It was a game with plenty of great defense, yes, but it also featured more than enough turnovers, missed field goals, bad quarterback play and way too much action in between the 20s.
What we saw was not a football game. It was more like a war of attrition with pads. And even after enhancing the experience with a few beers, I felt completely bored by it. Thankfully, the Oklahoma State vs. Kansas State game was on at the same time, and it was a humdinger.
If these two teams met up again, my fear is that we would get more of the same.
Been There, Done That
I hinted at this in the above point, but I want to flesh the idea out a little more. It's that important.
Heading into the "Game of the Century," there was a lot of talk about how it was a kind of BCS National Championship play-in game. The way things are looking now, it may just end up being a lose-in game as well.
If you ask me, that's kinda lame. It was a boring game, but I was keeping it in mind while watching it that something was going to be determined at the end of it all. Judging from the rankings and the general noise coming from the SEC peanut gallery, the only thing that was determined was that another game is needed to determine things.
Because, you know, LSU didn't make it clear enough that it is the better team. All the Tigers did was beat the best defensive team in the country in their own backyard.
If there is any justice in this world of ours, a different team will get a crack at the Tigers.
