Kansas City Chiefs Report Card Week 9: Grading Each Unit vs. Miami
Kansas City fell flat against Miami on Sunday, allowing the winless Dolphins to walk out of Arrowhead Stadium with an easy win.
It is hard to believe the Chiefs let this happen after a hot streak and coming into Sunday with a four-game winning streak while being on top of the AFC West.
Getting blown out by the Dolphins, let alone a loss, was the last thing on many minds.
This was not a pretty game for the Chiefs. If a person was to have this be the first football game he or she ever watched, they might have guessed that the Dolphins were Super Bowl contenders with the way they played on the road.
Just how bad were the Chiefs in this football game? Read these grades and let me know your thoughts.
Offense
1 of 5The offense hasn't played great during their four-game winning streak. Today, however, was unlike any game the offense has had this season.
Matt Cassel was sacked in this game five times. The offensive line made little effort to pick up blitzers.
It also seemed like we saw a different Cassel in this football game. Cassel nine scrambles and gained 38 yards on the ground as he was two yards away from leading the team.
With the recent emergence of Jackie Battle, the most popular fantasy football pickup in the month of October disappointed many fantasy football owners as he gained 40 yards off of 14 carries. Is Battle going to be able to play well against some of the upcoming defenses?
Steve Breaston had his first 100-yard game as he caught seven passes while Dwayne Bowe caught six. Behind Breaston and Bowe, seven other players were involved in the passing game, but not by a whole lot. The rest of the pass catchers in this game had one catch against the Dolphins.
The Chiefs offense was inside the 10-yard line twice but failed to score on four-down territory. They held the ball for nearly 35 minutes in this game and failed to break the plane once throughout the game.
Overall grade: D
Defense
2 of 5The Chiefs came away with 10 takeaways and four sacks in their two previous games against the Raiders and Chargers. They had zero in both categories against the Dolphins.
The defense was a complete disaster. Matt Moore increased his touchdown total on the season by 300 percent while struggling players such as tight end Anthony Fasano and wide receiver Brandon Marshall had a field day against the Chiefs defense.
The Dolphins deserve a lot of credit for double-teaming Tamba Hali. However, even when Hali was not double teamed, offensive tackle Jake Long handled Hali and kept him away from Moore.
The Chiefs played this game without safety Jon McGraw and cornerback Javier Arenas. It looks like the Chiefs missed those two players on defense today after giving up 31 points at home.
Overall grade: F
Special Teams
3 of 5The special teams helped the Chiefs get their only score of the game on the opening drive of the match.
But whether or not the Chiefs have Arenas, they struggle when it comes to returning the ball. The Chiefs were still bad in that area as Dexter McCluster had to handle all of the return duties.
The special teams unit broke apart in the third quarter when the Chiefs were setting up for a 52-yard field goal attempt. The kick would have pulled the Chiefs within an eight-point touchdown. However, punter and holder Dustin Colquitt did not get the snap very well from long snapper Thomas Gafford, resulting in a turnover on downs.
Colquitt has never had issues handling snaps for field goals. This is a first from him, and it seems like it helped build momentum for Miami as it prevented the situation from turning into a one-possession game.
Overall grade: D-
Coaching
4 of 5Forget about the beard, hat and sweatshirt that Todd Haley has been sporting lately. He even said himself that is the last thing on his mind.
Bill Muir has to be one of the worst play callers in the world. Not only are his play calls criticized, but he cannot get them in on time before the 15-second mark on the play clock. The Chiefs had to burn a timeout early in this game because Cassel did not receive the call on time.
Even worse, Haley did not have his team prepared and is using the short week as an excuse. After a game on Monday night, the Chiefs did not have their first practice until Thursday, which was a light walk through.
I'm not sure what Haley knew that we did not know, but he spent all week praising the Dolphins in his press conferences.
In Sunday's postgame press conferences, Haley kept saying the team is "a work in progress." It seems like after two-and-a-half years, this team has no idea what their identity is, which is something Haley thought his team figured out during their four game winning streak, but they haven't.
Among the four losses the Chiefs have suffered, three of them have been blowouts. It starts with Haley, who was recently considered to be a candidate for Coach of the Year. It seems he cannot stay consistent with his team.
Overall grade: F
Overview
5 of 5Don't make any excuses that the Chiefs were on a short week. They did not have to travel in order to prepare for their next game, unlike San Diego, who lost to Green Bay by a touchdown in a shootout.
Cassel isn't showing that he is worth what he is earning from his contract.
Another excuse fans are making is that the Dolphins were hungry for a win. That is basically saying the Dolphins were far more deserving of this win, which they clearly were.
Kansas City didn't lose to a bad football team on Sunday. They were chewed up in style.
The CBS cameras spotted owner Clark Hunt in the press box, who is rarely seen on television. I hope he paid very close attention to this game.
