Penn State Football Scandal: Joe Paterno Issues Statement
Former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky is facing 40 counts of sexual abuse charges after turning himself into a Centre County District Judge's office Saturday morning.
According to the Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot-News, Penn State head coach Joe Paterno did not see this coming. Paterno said, "If this is true we were all fooled," in his exclusive statement on Sunday.
Despite Paterno's statement, it appears certain Penn State officials did have knowledge of Sandusky's sexual abuse. According to the Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot-News, Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and Vice President for business and finance Gary Schultz ignored a 2002 report from current Penn State coach Mike McQueary.
McQueary claimed, in his report, to have seen Sandusky performing a lewd act with a boy in the shower of the Penn State football locker room.
Curley and Schlutz could each face up to seven years in prison for perjury and refusal to report a crime.
Sandusky's position is less enviable. If convicted, Sandusky faces up to life in prison. Out of the 40 counts, 21 are felonies and 19 are misdemeanors. All counts surround the sexual abuse of several young men.
A source close to the investigation told the Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot-News Paterno will not face any criminal charges. According to the source, prosecutors have praised Paterno's behavior thus far.
The investigation is currently ongoing and the grand jury will continue to meet concerning this scandal.
