BCS Rankings Week 11: Where Will Alabama End Up After Loss to LSU?

Zachary D. RymerNov 6, 2011

Alabama definitely could have beaten LSU in Saturday night's so-called "Game of the Century." The Crimson Tide just needed a few extra lucky bounces... not to mention fewer missed field goals.

Unfortunately, things didn't turn out this way, as the Tide lost 9-6 in overtime. The loss doesn't necessarily bar them from the BCS title game, but getting there is definitely going to be much tougher than it otherwise would have been.

For the moment, the question is where Alabama will end up when the new BCS rankings are announced tonight (8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN). The Tide was No. 2, but you can rest assured that they're not going to stay there.

But Alabama probably won't fall that far either.

To give you an idea, the USA Today Coaches' Poll is already out, and it has Alabama at No. 4, ahead of undefeated Boise State. The Harris Poll, which of course is the other human poll factored into the BCS rankings, hasn't yet been released, but the USA Today poll and the Harris Poll are generally in agreement when it comes to the top teams.

If we can presume that Alabama will be No. 4 in both human polls, the issue then becomes what the computers will think of the Crimson Tide.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprise if the computers are in agreement with the human polls. They won't have Alabama rated as the No. 2 team in the country, as they have in each of the last three weeks, but No. 4 is certainly reasonable.

Helping matters is the likely reality that the computers will have LSU rated as the No. 1 team in the country after its big victory. The computers have had Oklahoma State at No. 1 for the last three weeks, but LSU's win over the No. 2 team in the country will help its cause. In this case, LSU's gain should be Alabama's saving grace, so to speak.

Long story short, Alabama could be No. 4 across the board in the three parts of the BCS rankings. If so, the Tide would be the highest-ranked one-loss team in the country, and they would be ahead of undefeated Boise State in the chase for the title game.

Assuming Alabama doesn't lose for the rest of the season, it is therefore quite possible that we could see a rematch of LSU versus Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game.

If Saturday night's game was the Game of the Century, what would we call the rematch?
