College Football Coaching Hot Seat Week 11: Who's On and Who's Off?
The dust has cleared from "The Game of the Century," but it is safe to say both Les Miles' and Nick Saban's jobs are not in jeopardy.
However, there a few names who could be in jeopardy if they do not finish the season on a high note.
There were five coaches we thought were going to be on the hot seat and yet they are all coming away with huge victories.
So, let us take a look at which five are high and mighty and which five may be looking for jobs next season.
On Hot Seat: Houston Nutt
1 of 10The Rebels have been the worst team in the SEC and it is not even close right now. The Egg Bowl is coming up and we shall see if the Rebels can avoid a winless SEC season in 2011.
A loss to the rivaled Bulldogs and it may spell doom for Nutt's chances at staying in town.
Off Hot Seat: Mark Richt
2 of 10All of a sudden the Georgia Bulldogs are scorching hot and control their destiny in the SEC East. If Georgia can get past Georgia Tech who knows what we may see in the SEC Championship against LSU.
Regardless, this season has been a pleasant surprise with the play of the 'Dawgs in the past month or so. They should be a lock for the Outback/Capital One Bowl.
Off or On the Hot Seat?: Rick Neuheisel
3 of 10The Bruins needed to make a bowl game for any chance of Neuhsiel keeping his job. All of sudden, the Bruins look like a lock to make a bowl with Colorado left on the schedule.
Also, UCLA has a slight chance of making the Pac-12 Championship since they have the tiebreaker over Arizona State. However, UCLA still has USC and Utah on the road, which could be two losses.
On Hot Seat: Dennis Erickson
4 of 10We all thought the Sun Devils were a lock to win their division and here they are having to sweat it out. Plus, they just lost to a mediocre Bruins squad where they missed a few field goals that cost them the game.
They have a few winnable games, so if ASU can get into the Pac-12 Championship race most tend to believe that Erickson could keep his job for a bit longer.
On Hot Seat: Mike Sherman
5 of 10Once ranked in the preseason Top 10, how much patience can the Aggies have with the direction the football program is headed in?
They are headed to the SEC and will likely be in the West Division against teams that have owned them. Are the Aggies even going to win six games and reach a bowl when Ryan Tannehill graduates?
If the Aggies lose a few more games, including their bowl trip, don't be shocked if Sherman's seat gets a bit hotter.
Off Hot Seat: Kirk Ferentz
6 of 10Iowa was not looking good before their victory against Michigan since they were just 5-3. Now at 6-3, the Hawkeyes are not only a mortal lock for a bowl game, but they have a shot at winning the Legends Division.
They host Michigan State in a crucial game against the Spartans, but even if they lose, Ferentz' job should be fine with their upset victory over Michigan. If they can at least go 8-5, including a bowl victory (Iowa is a great bowl team under Ferentz 6-3), the Hawkeyes would have no worries about finding a new coach.
On Hot Seat: Mike Riley
7 of 10At 2-7, Oregon State is awful right now and their team does not seem to be improving in many if any areas.
The loss of Jacquizz Rodgers was tough, but there are no playmakers on either side of the ball outside of James Rodgers.
The defense was legit the past decade or so, but for two seasons they have underachieved and have flat out been atrocious.
If Riley cannot pony up and finish the season on any sort of strong note, he may be out the door sooner rather than later.
On Hot Seat: Jeff Tedford
8 of 10Teddy Bear has received a ton of hype and has never reached the high expectations at Cal. Last season he suffered a tough 5-7 season and this year could be similar (they should reach a bowl game).
Cal is not a program that should be fighting just to reach a bowl game, rather they should be a serious threat to win the Pac-12. They were once ranked No. 2 in the nation not too long ago, and they have had a ton of NFL stars go through the program.
Yet, they have never played in a BCS bowl and they are currently on the way down. They have been blown out in three of their losses losing 43-15 to Oregon, 31-14 to UCLA and 30-9 to USC.
If he's not looking for a job next season, he just might sooner rather than later.
On Hot Seat: Turner Gill
9 of 10Kansas is considered by many to be the worst team of any BCS program, and they have been embarrassing to watch on offense, ranking 90th in total yards per game.
At 2-7 overall, they are still winless in the Big 12 conference, having lost seven straight games overall.
They have to go to Texas A&M in two weeks but also have two home games remaining against Baylor and Missouri. Gill seemingly just took the job, but he better get a victory in the Big 12 this season or else Kansas could cut ties with him sometime next season if not sooner.
Off Hot Seat: Jim Grobe
10 of 10The record for Grobe the past three seasons was 13-20, and Wake Forest needed a decent season this year for Grobe to be a lock to stay in Winston-Salem.
However, his squad is 5-4 and they should be going to a bowl game in a season where they needed it the most. Wake Forest is relevant in the ACC this season, which is not something we have been able to say for the past few seasons.
