BCS Standings: South Carolina and the Biggest Losers of Week 10
Several teams suffered crushing blows to their BCS hopes in Week 10 and will plummet in the fresh set of rankings released on Sunday. Here are the three biggest losers of the weekend and where they can expect to be ranked heading into Week 11.
No. 9 South Carolina Gamecocks
Not only did South Carolina's loss to Arkansas blow one of its two opportunities to defeat a ranked team, but it also dropped the Gamecocks out of first place in the SEC East. Injured running back Marcus Lattimore was sorely missed as the replacements ran for just 79 yards on 33 carries.
Steve Spurrier and Co. are now relying on a Georgia home loss to either Auburn or Kentucky in order to get back into the BCS conversation. A once promising season is now hanging by a thread and it appears the Gamecocks are destined for a second-tier bowl.
Projected Ranking: 13
No. 10 Nebraska Cornhuskers
The Cornhuskers were shocked at home by unranked and sub-.500 Northwestern on Saturday. The loss dropped them a game behind Michigan State in the Big Ten Legends Division and ended any hope of an at-large BCS bid.
With road clashes against Penn State and Michigan over the next two weeks, it's possible for Nebraska to have a ranking resurgence. However, both of those teams have run-first offenses and could very well expose the same weakness the Wildcats did.
Projected Ranking: 18
No. 14 Kansas State Wildcats
Kansas State led by one with five minutes left and were tied with three minutes left before letting Oklahoma State escape victorious. It's the second straight loss for the Wildcats after starting 8-0 and have two more tough games left to play.
Instead of being tied for the Big 12 lead, they now find themselves all but mathematically eliminated from the automatic BCS bid. While they deserve credit for a strong start, the Wildcats' weak defense was going to catch up with them eventually.
Projected Ranking: 16
