Washington Hatchets hold off Edgewood Mustangs 61-56
The Washington Hatchets did something Friday at the Hatchet House they haven’t done in six years; namely, the Hatchets took the floor without a Zeller in the lineup.
Not since Dec. 13, 2002, when Luke Zeller was ill and missed a 56-51 win at South Knox, had the Hatchets not had at least one member of the Zeller family in the lineup, a span of 146 games which has seen Washington record a 123-23 mark and two state championships.
And though Class 3A No. 2 Washington was without sophomore center Cody Zeller, who suffered a broken bone in his left hand early in last Saturday’s win at North Daviess, the Hatchets were still able to hold off Edgewood 61-56.
Washington (4-0) avenged their last loss, a defeat at Edgewood last Dec. 7, and won their 25th consecutive game dating back to last season with the help of another big man, 6-6 senior Wade Collins. Collins took up the slack against Edgewood (2-1) with another fine outing, going for 17 points and eight rebounds and making two key plays in the fourth quarter to help keep the Hatchets ahead.
Washington led 13-7 after one quarter but saw the wheels come off on the offensive end in the second quarter as Edgewood led 27-19 at the half. But the Hatchets got going in the third quarter, scoring eight straight points in less than two minutes to open the half to knot the score at 27-27, with Collins and junior guard Derek Singleton, who had a strong outing with 15 points on the night, doing most of the damage.
“The second quarter, I don’t know what happened. We just fell apart in the second quarter,” said Washington coach Gene Miiller. “Then we came out in the second half and Derek got us off to a great start. That was the key to the ballgame, we were down eight, and we tied the game up right off the bat.
