New York Marathon 2011 Results: Geoffrey Mutai Wins Marathon in Record Time
Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai won the 2011 New York Marathon mens' title in record time on Sunday, capturing his second marathon title this year.
The Kenyan won the marathon with an unofficial time of two hours, five minutes, and six seconds. He destroyed the previous record of two hours, seven minutes, and 43 seconds which was set in 2001 by Tesfaye Jifar of Ethiopia.
Mutai won this year's Boston Marathon back in April with a time of two hours, three minutes, and two seconds but because of course issues the record setting time was not recognized by the IAAF as a world record.
After running in the lead pack of mens runners for most of the day, Mutai began to distance himself from the rest of the top contestants as the race lengthened.
Mutai blew away the field in an epic performance and vaulted himself into the elite marathon runners in history.
The Boston Marathon and the New York Marathon are two of the hardest and most prestigious events for runners to win, and Mutai has made the very difficult task look easy.
