Andre Villas-Boas Questions Future: 5 Reasons Chelsea Should Keep Him Long-Term

Dan RenfroNov 9, 2011

Recently, Andre Villas-Boas admitted that he didn't intend on staying at Chelsea for a long time.

"

"It's a stressful job, which is why I don't want to be doing it for a long time. It affects your personal life, that's part of the job. Any negative result get you down."

"

While I appreciate Villas-Boas' honesty, I don't like this type of negativity from the manager. He should be a constant on the bench. The players should expect him back every single season. Otherwise, it's tough to buy into a system from a man that doesn't want to be here too long.

How are young players going to feel when Chelsea is trying to sign them? Sure, they like Villas-Boas, but what happens in three years when he leaves, and they're left with a manager they don't like.

Chelsea have a young manager, and they have the chance to make him a legend within the club. He knows the sport, and he has a plan to build a champion. Now, Chelsea need to take it a step further and commit to Villas-Boas for the long-term.

Chelsea (i.e. Roman Abramovich) are notorious for having a quick turnaround with managers. With Villas-Boas, it shouldn't be that way. He is a talented young manager, and he needs to stay at Stamford Bridge.

He Has a Plan

When Andre Villas-Boas came to Chelsea in the summer, it was clear that he had a plan to change the identity of the squad.

No longer would the club be a defensive, slow-attacking, grind-it-out team. Instead, it would have a free-flowing attack that would start from any part of the field.

So, how did Villas-Boas decide on going about that?

Well, first he went out and got some players. Romelu Lukaku and Oriol Romeu were two young players who Villas-Boas targeted and bought for the future. For the present, he went and got Juan Mata.

The purchase of Mata has been one of the best purchases in the club's recent history. Many people knew how talented Mata was, but I don't think they knew he would have quite this impact. He has been Chelsea's best player so far this year, and he has orchestrated countless goals.

Villas-Boas knew the type of player he would need to be successful. Obviously, he wasn't able to get Luka Modric, but he still made a great purchase in Mata, and it will be interesting to see if he can continue to have success with his transfers.

He Attempts To Pick the Best Squad for Each Match

Andre Villas-Boas is one of the most well-prepared managers in the world. He is known for studying opponents tirelessly, looking for even the slightest advantage he could provide for his squad.

From match to match, Villas-Boas has done his best to pick the best lineup possible. It isn't always the same, because the opponent is never the same. Obviously, injuries and suspensions have affected some of his selections.

Either way, he's putting the best squad out there every single match, and that's a tough thing to do.

Earlier this year, Villas-Boas decided to keep Frank Lampard on the bench. Now, however, Lampard is one of the most in-form players on the roster, and he has notched five goals in his last five league matches. It is just one example of how Villas-Boas knows when to pick certain players.

By knowing the manager will pick the best player possible, every player is eager to prove himself. They all know they need to be at their best in order to play, and that can bring the best out of good players. By pushing all the right buttons, Villas-Boas knows how to build up his players and get the most out of them.

He Plays an Entertaining Style

Who doesn't like watching free-flowing football?

When done correctly, a free-flowing attack is one of the purest ways to play the sport. Chelsea players are not overly creative; yet, they have been getting better and better at trying things on the pitch. In doing so, they have provided great entertainment for the fans.

It won't always work. However, such an attack has the opportunity to dismantle other teams in the Premier League, especially with clubs at the bottom of the table. When Chelsea start to play the top clubs (remember, they still have two league matches with each of these clubs: Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur), they will need to be able to score goals.

Chelsea's defense is looking better, but it's still prone for the occasional lapse. With that looming, they need to make sure their shots are finding the net.

Chelsea are a talented attacking team. With Andre Villas-Boas' guidance, they have the chance to be one of the best attacking teams in the league.

He Understands Chelsea's Tradition

4 of 5

That is, maybe there isn't a great tradition.

Yes, Chelsea are one of the most successful clubs in the English Premier League's history, but they don't quite have the legends that Arsenal or Manchester United quite have. Many people have a mercenary-esque mindset, where players are brought in for short-term solutions rather than long-term careers.

I admit to falling into that trap. It's easy to get sick of the old and look for the new. That's exactly what Andre Villas-Boas is expecting to happen. It's human nature to ask: What have you done for me lately?

Regardless of how successful Chelsea are, if they have an extended run of poor form, people will look to Villas-Boas as the cause. At times, he will deserve some blame, but maybe, he should be given a little more understanding.

If he manages to bring Chelsea some silverware, shouldn't he be given the benefit of the doubt when things go wrong? He is an intelligent football mind, and Chelsea fans (and Roman Abramovich) should do their best to leave him at the helm and try to make him a legendary manager.

He Knows How to Win

5 of 5

Wherever he's gone, Andre Villas-Boas has found ways to win.

Under Jose Mourinho, he won multiple pieces of silverware in his time at Porto, Chelsea and Inter. As an assistant, he was able to scout other teams, while learning how to manage from (arguably) one of the best managers in history.

Then, after a successful 11th-place finish with previously relegation-bound Academica, that included a Portuguese League Cup semifinal appearance, he joined Porto.

In his only season in charge at Porto, Villas-Boas won the Portuguese Supercup, Primeira League, UEFA Europa League and the Portuguese Cup. Let me reiterate: that was all in one season.

That's absurd.

Obviously, success like that is unlikely at the highest level (Portuguese Cups and the Europa League aren't quite on the same level as England and Champions League), but that's not the point. Villas-Boas knows what it takes to bring home trophies. With that experience, he can lead Chelsea back to the top.
