BCS Standings: How Boise State Gets a Title Shot over OSU, Stanford and 'Bama

Jim SullivanNov 6, 2011

Boise State is once again the bane of college football.

The BCS must seriously hate these guys, because they have been busting their perfect Bowl Series since the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.

At first, they were just that fluke in the system that every system has. The exception to the rule.

If you ignore it long enough, it won't continue to be so bothersome—but they have certainly been persistent. They even invited their friends from TCU to help them out when they had an off year.

Now they stand in the top five of the BCS again, praying that the perfect storm occurs in which they somehow end up in New Orleans playing for the National Title.

The problem this year, though, is that they actually deserve to be there, and have the right tools to be more than competitive against whoever their opponent may be.

Most people have argued that the Broncos don't play a hard enough schedule, which in my humble opinion is completely true.

However, Boise State did play a big-time SEC team this season, and beat them solidly, 35-21. Georgia now stands atop the SEC East, and has hopes of a possible BCS Bowl should they surprise the SEC West Champion in the SEC Championship.

Boise State deserves a chance at the title just as much as Kellen Moore deserves a shot at the Heisman. They may not be the best out there, but they perform under pressure and have a spotless record.

Alabama just lost to LSU, and doesn't deserve to be in the title game as long as LSU wins out. The Tide should have no chance of ranking above the Broncos come season's end as long as Boise remains vigilant with its undefeated record.

Of the three teams that could challenge Boise for the title spot, 'Bama was the easy one to eliminate. Oklahoma State and Stanford both have powerful offenses and stout defenses, not to mention an undefeated record in two of the most competitive conferences in the nation.

For Boise State's perfect storm to occur, there are three requirements.  Fortunately for them, they aren't obscure or way outside the realm of possibility. Personally, I believe all three of these things stand as much of a possible outcome as any.

1) Boise State Must Win Out

This is the easy one.

The Broncos have four games remaining, and every one of them should be a cinch. Boise State has performed admirably so far this season, and don't expect them to break down and die just yet.

Their matchups against TCU, Wyoming and New Mexico are all at home, while San Diego State will be in California. The Broncos are too good of a team to let one of these weaker squads surprise them, and Chris Petersen will have his team prepared for every single one, guaranteed.

On a scale of one to ten of actually happening, I put this requirement up there at nine.

2) Stanford Must Lose to Oregon

The Cardinal have been coddled all year by their extremely easy schedule. They have played one BCS-ranked opponent in No. 25 Washington so far, but otherwise have been barren of anyone tough.

Around one week from now, Stanford takes on Oregon in Palo Alto. The Oregon game is Luck's opportunity to prove that he deserves the Heisman, as well as a shot at the national title.

Personally, I don't think Stanford has the talent or the speed to match up well with Oregon, and will fall to their Pac-12 North foe easily. This game will eliminate another undefeated team from the standings.

On a scale of one to ten of possibly occurring, I would put this up there at seven.

3) Oklahoma State Must Lose to Oklahoma

The Cowboys have been a big time surprise all year. Their single-point win over the Texas A&M Aggies, as well as their close victories over Kansas State and Missouri, have demonstrated that they do possess some weaknesses that much stronger teams could exploit and take advantage of.

Their in-state rival Oklahoma fell to Texas Tech earlier this season, ruining all national title hopes they may have had. The Sooners still possess the power to knock off Oklahoma State, though, making sure that no one from their state gets to go to New Orleans.

Both teams are fantastic, and should win out till that game. OSU will have its toughest game all season versus Oklahoma, and even though they are the ones with the undefeated record, the likelihood that they go out and lose this game is higher than you would think.

On a scale of one to ten of this happening, I rank this around six.

Conclusion

Basically, Boise State has more of a shot than anyone gives them credit for. The only downfall in their perfect storm plan would be if OU or Oregon jumped them if requirements two and three work out.

The Broncos have the talent, coaching and strength to match up against any team in the nation, but don't expect these BCS Busters to receive any love, respect or high rankings from the pollsters.

As fun as it would be to see Boise finally have its shot at the national title, their chances of successfully reaching New Orleans are still one in a million... But hey, I'm sure that's what was said about them winning the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, as well.
