Manny Pacquiao Would Never Truly Agree to Winner-Take-All Fight with Mayweather

Mike ChiariNov 6, 2011

Manny Pacquiao has made a tradition of going on Jimmy Kimmel Live before big fights. He continued that tradition this week ahead of his third meeting with Juan Manuel Marquez. Inevitably, the conversation turned to Floyd Mayweather.

It has been said that Mayweather has been ducking Pacquiao based upon his monetary demands for the fight. I personally believe he's simply money hungry, though. As a solution, Kimmel suggested that Pacquiao and Mayweather should agree to a winner-takes-all fight.

Being the fan favorite that he is, Pacquiao predictably agreed to that stipulation. He would have looked like a coward on national television had he backed down, so it's obvious why he said he would be willing to fight under such pretenses.

Also, seeing as Mayweather would never agree to something like that, Pacquiao comes out looking like the tough guy. Mayweather isn't a coward for presumably refusing to engage in a winner-take-all fight, rather he is simply a smart business man.

There is plenty of money to be had for both Pacquiao and Mayweather should Pacquiao get past Marquez next weekend. I ultimately think that they will come to some sort of an agreement, but there is no way that either man will agree to something that doesn't give them guaranteed money.

Even if Pacquiao truly did want to engage in such a fight, Top Rank boxing promotions CEO Bob Arum simply wouldn't allow it. While Arum is a bit of a blowhard who likes to run his mouth, he's surely not an idiot. Regardless of whether Pacquiao is favored or not, that is far too large of a purse to risk.

Some type of monetary resolution obviously has to be reached, but this isn't it. One interesting idea that has been proposed is a 45 percent/45 percent split between the two fighters with the final 10 percent going to the winner.

This way, both fighters are guaranteed an insane amount of money, but there is still extra incentive. Mayweather likely will want the money up front, but if he wants to prove to the public that he isn't afraid of Pacquiao and that he is confident he would beat him, then this is a great option.

Whatever the case, each fighter has to give a little to get a lot. Pacquiao says he would be willing to put his money where his mouth is and risk not making a dime, but I doubt he is really that stupid. Pac-Man can pretend to be a more noble person than Mayweather as much as he wants, but they are both ultimately in it for the money.
