WWE Perspective Week 1: Should John Morrison Stay or Should He Go?

Ryan FryeNov 6, 2011

Welcome to the first ever edition of WWE Perspective.

Each week, Jacob Waring and I will square off in a debate that covers a hot topic in the WWE at the time. We will give you our perspective, then hand you the keys.

John Morrison may just be the most controversial WWE Superstar today. Just bringing up his name will literally cause a civil war amongst IWC members.

Some feel that John Morrison has all the tools and that he should have been main eventing WWE pay-per-views long ago. Others feel as if Morrison has no charisma, microphone skills or even intelligence.

So today, my good friend Jacob Waring and I debate on if John Morrison should stay in the WWE, or if he shall bolt for greener pastures.

Ryan Frye

John Morrison has been in the WWE for years, and many have said he deserves a main event spot for quite some time now.

So, why should he leave? Yes, he’s on a losing streak, but that leaves the perfect opportunity for a heel turn (a role Morrison is undoubtedly better at).

Morrison should take the approach CM Punk did, not just quit and go to TNA. I mean, do we really think TNA can book much of anything right?

Just take a look at Mr. Anderson. We don’t want John to become that, do we JoMoSapiens.

And for any other promotion, they would not give JoMo a big enough platform to become a star.

None of this is true for the WWE, though. It’s the ultimate stage.

Jacob Waring

John Morrison will end up being the next Marty Jannetty. Excuse me, allow me to correct myself; he already the modern day Marty Jannetty. The WWE obviously has lost faith in Morrison and the losing streak that is more ridiculous than MVP's from years ago proves just that.

The man should just cut his losses and go where the grass is greener, such as Ring of Honor or Impact Wrestling. Yes, they may be the “minor leagues,” but he’ll no doubt be a top star in both and end up being a world champion when he could not even achieve that in the WWE.

Ryan, you say Morrison won’t have a big enough platform to become a star? He’s already a star who is marketable, and any company will find value in him. It’s evident that the WWE will let him rot in mid-card hell and not push him.

Ryan Frye

To say John Morrison is the modern day Marty Jannetty is ridiculous.

Remember earlier this year? John Morrison was main eventing Raw, and even got a WWE Championship match against former buddy The Miz. In fact, Morrison should have main evented the Royal Rumble.

As for TNA, who is the last real star they created?

Robert Roode? Very rushed in my opinion.

Who else, Crimson? In a way, but he has the storyline of a guy from WCW and has yet to get a title shot.

AJ Styles? Well, what is he doing right now?

Ring of Honor, as much I respect it, isn't the place to become a star. You aren't captivating millions every week.

Maybe Morrison will turn out to be a Jannetty. But anywhere else, JoMo would never have a shot to be Shawn Michaels—the man he is often compared to.

Jacob Waring

Oh, I remember Ry-Ry, but I also remember how he treated Trish Stratus with disrespect by giving her the cold shoulder for the sake of his girlfriend. That shows how immature and pathetic Morrison is in a professional working environment.

Also, let’s not forget that Morrison has been out a lot in the past year due to injuries. Bad behavior plus injuries is not a good mixture as that’ll lead to him being released.

You and every other fan are brainwashed sheep that’ll only consider a pro-wrestler a star as long as he or she is in the WWE. It’s laughable as Danial Bryan, CM Punk, AJ Styles and Samoa Joe all are stars in their own right before stepping or never stepping foot in the WWE.

He’s no Shawn Michaels, as he’s a one of a kind legend, while Jannetty after the breakup was a bland, run-of-the-mill low-card wrestler. John Morrison will be a legend in his own right, and it’ll be good for him to get out of the sheltered life that is the WWE and explore the big wide world.

Hell, he could use some experiences of spending a few years in Japan, Mexico and various European promotions. When the time is right, he’ll return to the WWE with better tools to become the WWE champion and be a mainstay in the main event.

Ryan Frye

The entire incident with Trish Stratus is completely overblown. Shawn Michaels, Dolph Ziggler and Tommy Dreamer have all said he is a very nice guy and not just another tool in the locker room that has an ego the size of Texas.

I agree with the fact that you can be a star without the WWE, but you’ll never be a legend. I mean, you just will not have the same name recognition. Fair or not, more people know who Brodus Clay is than Seth Rollins.

Also, I wasn’t saying John Morrison is the next Shawn Michaels, because I am against that comparison. What I am saying is Morrison can become his own legend in the WWE, but he cannot anywhere else on the planet.

Star? Sure. But the name recognition you get with the WWE is unmatched.

Jacob Waring

Sin Cara was a living legend on an international level way before he set foot in the WWE. Sting, who is a legend, never was in the WWE and is known worldwide. It’s possible for Morrison or anybody to become a legend on the same recognition as HBK.

The issue is Morrison lacks an ego, lacks the iron will and rock hard gonads to become a WWE champion. He’s not willing to kiss ass or do some major politicking in the back that goes beyond childish cold shoulders.

He’ll never be the top guy or win the WWE title. It’s better for him to leave and gain the tools to even be considered a legend of any kind one day.

That’s the way the cookie crumbles!

Ryan Frye

Sin Cara is a legend in Mexico, but that’s it. He is not a star in the United States, in Europe or anywhere else—just Mexico.

Sting was in WCW, which had a bigger audience than even the WWE did at one time. In TNA, that is far from the case.

John Morrison has proven he has all the tools. He can amaze the crowd with awe-inspiring moves. He can tell a story. He can make the crowd hate his guts (ala ECW in 2007). He can be funny. He oozes charisma.

If pushed correctly, John Morrison is a star in the WWE. Considering every talent who has an expiring contract goes through this stage, even Chris Jericho and CM Punk, I believe all John Morrison needs to do is re-sign. WWE will be forced to recognize his talent and give him the spot he deserves.

It’s simply what history proves will happen.

Your turn

What do you think? Should John Morrison stay with the WWE, or should he leave the company and go elsewhere?
