Breeders Cup 2011 Entries: Uncle Mo and Havre De Grace Make This a 2-Horse Race

Richard LangfordNov 5, 2011

Only two of 11 horses have a shot to win the 2011 Breeders' Cup. Havre de Grace and Uncle Mo are just that much better than the rest of the field. Let's review the two stars of this race.

Uncle Mo

After illness kept him out of the early season's races, he is back with a vengeance.

At the Kelso Stakes, Uncle Mo blew away the field, winning by three lengths and completing the one-mile race in 1:33.82 on a muddy track at Belmont Park.

While Uncle Mo has never run the classic distance of a mile-and-a-quarter, this should not be a concern.

Uncle Mo has the stride, speed and stamina to succeed at this distance. Just ask his owner Mike Repole.

Repole, as quoted by Nancy Kerchevalon on businessweek.com: "The way Mo ran in the Kelso it looked like he could go two miles, and it didn’t look like anybody could catch him.”

Or you could ask jockey John Velasquez after the race, via ESPN: "They told me to let him go and to leave him alone, so I just let him do whatever he wanted to do. I had plenty of horse, so when I asked him to run, he was there for me."

Havre de Grace

Havre de Grace has been stellar from start to finish this year. She is just one photo-finish defeat to Blind Luck from winning every race she entered this year, and Blind Luck is not in this field.

She's won three Grade 1 races in 2011, along with two Grade 3s.

She was absolutely dominant running against the boys recently. Here is her recent victory at Grade 1 Woodward Handicap at Saratoga.

Prediction

Uncle Mo will beat Havre de Grace by half a length, and they will both have four lengths on the rest of the field.
