View from Kingsmeadow, Volume 59: Dons Say Hello To Another Old Friend

Jo-Ryan SalazarNov 5, 2011

Terry Brown's AFC Wimbledon heard the news that they would be taking on the Iron of Scunthorpe United in the first round proper of the 2011-12 FA Cup. But that match, which would be held at Kingsmeadow, would not be on the minds of the players this week.

This week, it was about the match against the Bees of Barnet F.C., managed by former Wimbledon ace Lawrie Sanchez. Last season, Barnet finished 22nd in the Football League Two, just out of relegation by a single point with a record of 12-22-12 (48 points).

Barnet are led by the goal-scoring tandem of Izale McLeod and Steve Kabba. McLeod scored 14 goals last year in all competitions, while Kabba recorded 11.

McLeod currently leads the team in goals with 11, while Ricky Holmes has recorded six this year.

"We are in the fortunate position of having hardly any injuries at present so some people are going to be disappointed but team spirit is high," said assistant manager Stuart Cash, "and those players who miss out are guaranteed a start on Tuesday at Swindon, subject to the rule about starting with at least six of Saturday's eleven.

"Training this week has been very good and today's session was very positive - the boys are keen to get back to winning ways. We're expecting a decent crowd again tomorrow and we hope that we'll be sending them home happy after seeing us take all three points."

McLeod continued his stellar scoring form, recording his 12th of the season in the first minute of first-half stoppage time. In the 62nd minute, Wimbledon's Sammy Moore equalized off a Kieran Djilali through ball.

And that would be the final result, as AFC Wimbledon and Barnet played to a 1-1 draw.

The recent string of results raises a red flag heading into the FA Cup tie with Scunthorpe United, as well as the Johnstone's Paint Trophy match with Swindon Town on Tuesday. Can the Dons get their act together and secure a couple of important results?

Kickoff between Swindon and AFC Wimbledon is scheduled for Nov. 8 at 11:30 a.m. PT/2:30 p.m. ET.

Kickoff between the Iron and the Dons at Kingsmeadow is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7:00 p.m. PT/10:00 p.m. ET.
