Florida Gators Football: Future Impact of Top WR Visiting This Weekend

Drew LaingNov 4, 2011

Everybody knows how important the upcoming game against Vanderbilt is for the Florida Gators. This game could decide the fate of the Gators in terms of a bowl game, as well as the difference between a salvageable or disastrous season.

But this weekend will also have a crucial impact on the future of the Florida Gators, too.

According to Rivals.com, 5-star athlete Nelson Agholor from Berkley Prep (Tampa, Fla.) will be in Gainesville for the Gators' matchup against Vanderbilt. Agholor, who is being recruited to play wide receiver by the Gators, has been rumored to have Florida out on top so far. And if the Gators can impress Agholor further this weekend while he is in town, it could be a big plus for Florida in the long run.

Agholor is a dynamic playmaker who has great hands and very quick instincts on the ball. He could be a game-changer at the next level. Considered by many as the top wide receiver in Florida, as well as in the nation, Agholor is a can't-miss type of player. His elite speed make him an explosive deep threat, and his athletic ability will make it tough for defensive backs to beat him on a play.

What makes Agholor so important for Florida are these characteristics, but also the fact that the Gators' wide receiver corps is currently missing this kind of big-time player. Deonte Thompson, Quinton Dunbar, Andre Dubose and Frankie Hammond Jr. have all been underwhelming this season. The Gators' passing attack has suffered because of it, making them more one-dimensional, which causes the running game to suffer some as well.

Adding an elite receiver like Agholor would provide offensive coordinator Charlie Weis an immediate weapon in the passing game that has been lacking at Florida since the departure of Percy Harvin. And whichever quarterback fills the role of starter next season, Agholor's presence on the field could help establish some consistency in the passing game as well as confidence in the young quarterback.

Florida needs a wide receiver that wants that will fight for the football, show some toughness out on the field and be able to make big plays at the same time. So far in high school, Agholor's stats show he can make things happen when he has the ball in his hands.

According to Scout.com, Agholor amassed 1,400 all-purpose yards in only his freshman season. As a sophomore, he had more than 1,000 total yards, along with 17 touchdowns and four interceptions on defense. Last year, he put together similar numbers with more than 1,700 all-purpose yards and three interceptions.

Clearly, Agholor can be a playmaker on the field, and adding that dimension to a struggling Florida offense could give the Gators a big boost over the next few seasons. Agholor is someone the Gators desperately need if they intend on returning to their elite status soon.

Let's hope the Gators are able to get the job done this weekend against Vanderbilt and show Agholor why it's great to be a Florida Gator.
