Pacquiao vs Marquez: Why Rubber Match Will Go the Distance

Josh SchochNov 9, 2011

Just like the first two, the third fight between Manny "Pac-Man" Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez will not be decided in a knockout.

The first bout between these two ended in a draw. There was not clear-cut winner, although Marquez felt that he should have been declared the winner.

The second fight ended in a split-decision in favor of Pacquiao, yet Marquez felt that he should have won again.

There has been some serious controversy surrounding these fights, and it's hard to pick out which of these fighters has been better. Hopefully, the third fight will show us who is better in a unanimous decision, as there is no way either fighter gets knocked out.

Both fighters have changed their training and fighting styles for the third fight. After seeing each other twice they don't want to let the other know what they are planning, and have therefore changed things up a bit.

Pacquiao does not typically spar on the first Monday in Los Angeles, but he has broken tradition for this fight. It is unclear as to whether or not this will help Pac-Man, as he may need the rest on Monday, or this may help him get into shape faster for the fight.

On the other hand, Marquez has added a lot of muscle for this fight. A lot. He weighed in at 132 pounds less than a year ago, and he has recently gone up 10-15 pounds, making this the heaviest he has been for a fight.

Marquez has to adjust to his new, bulkier body if he wants to win the fight. He is usually a much quicker fighter, but he is going to be stronger and most likely slower in this fight, and he has to change his strategy accordingly.

These two are tired of having unfinished business, and are taking new approaches to the fight. This is not a rubber match, it is not even a fight pitting together two fighters who have fought before.

This is new territory for both fighters, and because it is so difficult to adjust to new methods there is no way either can knock out the other.
