LSU vs. Alabama: Nick Saban Will Prove He's a Better Coach Than Les Miles
When Alabama beats LSU on Saturday night in what many are calling the "Game of the Century," Crimson Tide Nick Saban will prove he's a better coach than the Tigers' Les Miles.
Their coaching styles are quite different, but each way these coaches lead their young players works for them and has produced brilliant results.
Saban's BCS title-winning Alabama team in 2009 was a fantastic team with a great defense that dominated teams en route to a perfect 14-0 season.
After winning the national title in 2003 at LSU, Saban left for the NFL in 2004 to briefly coach the Miami Dolphins.
The man who replaced him was Les Miles, who won the 2007 BCS title with LSU when his Tigers beat Ohio State 38-24.
Saban is a cold, serious man, who runs his team like a corporate executive—upon seeing him it's clear that he's the guy in charge.
His aura is similar to New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick. Things are done Saban's way and there aren't any questions.
"There’s just a standard of excellence for everyone in the organization," said Alabama offensive lineman Barrett Jones. "Some people just worry about football, I guess. But coach Saban takes over every aspect of a program, from top to bottom. From the equipment managers and training staff to the (graduate assistants) and all the coaches, no stone goes unturned. He gets everyone on the same program with him."
Miles is a more laid-back guy who enjoys singing with players and isn't the most well-spoken coach. His love for trick plays and gambling on fourth downs certainly creates excitement during his team's games.
For all the differences between the two coaches, Saban will prove on Saturday he's in a class of his own.
Not only has he won two BCS titles to Miles' one, Saban resurrected a once great program and brought back consistent football success to Alabama.
It's one thing to take over talent that's good and win, then continue that success, but it's another to build something and sustain it.
Miles inherited some very good players and teams from Saban at LSU, but at Alabama he had to rebuild the Crimson Tide into a powerhouse.
In just his second season at Alabama, Saban led the Tide to a 12-0 regular season before they lost to the eventual BCS champion Florida in the SEC title game.
The next season was Saban's finest as a coach, when he led the Crimson Tide to a perfect 14-0 season and a BCS title over Texas.
Saban is not only a better X's and O's coach than Miles, he has won titles at two different schools while rebuilding one of them.
His ability to create complicated defensive packages to confuse opposing quarterbacks really brings out his defensive smarts, and it's no surprise his defense is allowing the fewest points per game in the nation this season at 6.9.
Les Miles is a very good coach, but Nick Saban is better in many ways. On Saturday, when LSU and Alabama meet with everything at stake, Saban will prove he is the elite coach in the nation.
