2011 Breeders' Cup Field: Why Uncle Mo Is Under the Most Pressure to Succeed
Uncle Mo was a fantastic horse prior to a liver illness that cost him a shot at the Kentucky Derby title and a possible triple crown, and he is under enormous pressure to win the Breeders' Cup classic on Saturday and prove he is back to full strength.
Saturday's $5 million race is one of the most prestigious races in the sport of horse racing, and a victory for Uncle Mo would help him regain his status as a top horse.
Endurance will be key to Uncle Mo's ability to sustain a good pace at the 1 1/4 mile track at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
Uncle Mo's trainer, Todd Platcher, recently said that endurance is "...always a concern."
Even at full strength this will not be an easy race for Uncle Mo to win. The field is full of talented horses looking to prove themselves on one the biggest stages in horse racing.
Horses such as So You Think, Game on Dude and filly Havre de Grace are all worthy competitors and could easily win the Classic.
Back in early October, Uncle Mo came away victorious in the Kelso Handicap at Belmont Park. In that race he showed great speed and won the race comfortably.
He must show that same speed to have a chance on Saturday night at the Breeders' Cup.
Uncle Mo is starting to revive his career after a terrible illness caused him to put his racing on hold.
A spectacular performance on Saturday and a win in the Classic would almost be a Hollywood moment for his career.
