LSU vs. Alabama: What Are the Odds One of These Teams Blows the Other Out?

Danny FlynnNov 4, 2011

“The Game of the Century!”

Obviously, any time a regular season college football game receives that kind of title, it’s certainly got a lot to live up to.

That’s the case for tomorrow night’s much-anticipated LSU/Alabama mega-matchup in Tuscaloosa.

Any true college football fan has had this game circled on their calendar since the end of last season, but now with these two teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the country so late in the season, the game has taken on a whole new life of its own.

This is one of the most hyped up and scrutinized college football games in decades, and the media attention it's been given is unprecedented for a regular season contest.

Tomorrow night, we’ll finally get to see who is the real deal and who just isn’t quite up to snuff, but the real question is: Will the game actually live up to expectations and be the classic we’re all expecting?

Pretty much everyone seems to think that the game will come down to the last few minutes in the fourth quarter, and while there’s good reason to think that, you have to wonder if maybe this game could actually turn into a blowout.

Neither of these two teams have come close to being tested like they will be on Saturday night, so it’s hard to gauge just how ready both of them really are.

Sure, LSU went to Cowboys Stadium to play Oregon on opening weekend and Alabama went up to Happy Valley to play Penn State, but this game has a totally different aura surrounding it, and there’s no telling how both teams will respond to this kind of stage.

The numbers say these two teams are just about even, and judging from the types of resumes they’ve put together, you have to say that there isn’t a team in college football that can compare to either of them at this point in the season. Still, we haven’t seen either of these teams have to mount a comeback yet.

Pressurized moments and big stages can do funny things to even the best football teams.

Would it really be all that surprising if one team put its foot on the gas and won convincingly? Something along the lines of 33-17 isn't out of the question.

It would probably take a few lucky breaks to happen (key turnover, kick return or blocked punt), but it’s not out of the realm of possibility, especially for a team like Alabama, which has the benefit of feeding off the home crowd after a momentum-swinging play.

While I personally think that the game will remain close for the most part, and that it will probably come down to the play of both teams in the fourth quarter, I wouldn’t necessarily say I’d be shocked to see the final score be a little more lopsided than most are predicting.
