Big East Expansion: Can Any of These Teams Compete with Boise State?
Boise State has earned itself the title of king of the weak conference. They dominated the WAC and are now dominating the Mountain West.
It is rumored that the Broncos will soon accept an invitation to join the Big East, a conference that many people say is the worst automatic qualifying conference in the entire country.
Will they continue their dominance or fall by the wayside now that they are facing some stiffer competition?
It may not happen next year, but Boise State should run the show in the Big East soon enough.
The reason why they may not be able to do it next year is because of all of their losses. They lose their amazing quarterback Kellen Moore, running back Doug Martin, their leading receiver, their tight end, three of their offensive linemen, their entire defensive line, both linebackers and four from their secondary. And their punter.
That is a lot of losses to say the least, but Boise blows opponents out on such a regular basis that many of the young guys get a lot of playing time even though they don’t start. And while it would be unfair to already compare Joe Southwick to Kellen Moore, Petersen has a done a great job transitioning quarterbacks in the past.
The Big East has also become notorious for losing on the road. Of the teams staying in the conference, nine of their total 16 losses were on the road. Boise’s home winning percentage is one of the best in the country, so it is unlikely that they will win in Idaho. The Broncos have gone on the road so much with a target on their back, they will be more than ready to take on what the Big East has to offer on the East Coast.
Additionally, none of the other teams we are assuming will join the conference—Houston, Air Force, Navy, Central Florida, SMU—will be that good next year, either.
Until a team proves they can win on the road or shocks everyone with how good they are, Boise State should remain on top of their conference.
