WWE Network: 10 Ideas for New Shows on the Wrestling Channel

The Doctor Chris MuellerNov 3, 2011

WWE has been working frantically over the last year in preparation for the launch of their very own network.

For years there have been rumors circulating about a possible WWE channel which would show new content from WWE as well as classic shows from other promotions which the WWE owns the rights to like WCCW.

Lately more polls have been popping up on WWE.com asking fans for input on names for new WWE shows. It looks as if WWE is focusing heavily on new content, which gives me hope that this will be a good venture for WWE.

I am not sure how many people would pay extra just for a WWE channel unless it included the monthly pay-per-views at no extra cost.

If WWE decides to move Raw and SmackDown to their network exclusively and it needs to be paid for, then they may lose out on a lot of viewers.

One thing that got me wondering is what kinds of new shows will they have? Will they all be wrestling related or will they have some variety?

Here I will give 10 ideas I think could make good shows that would fit right in on the WWE network.

The Real Housewives of WWE

1 of 11

WWE is basically a live action soap opera, so why not have them mix reality and fiction and mimic the other Real Housewives shows?

There is plenty to work with within the WWE roster to make this show work. Several of the Divas are either involved with another wrestler or married to someone outside the wrestling world.

Think about it, They could have Michelle McCool (The Undertaker's wife), Vickie Guerrero (Eddie's wido), Beth Phoenix (CM Punk's girlfriend), Natalya Neidhart (Tyson Kidd's girlfirend) and they could bring in Jennifer Hudson (David Otunga's fiance). Vince's wife Linda could even join the cast if her bid for Senate does not work out.

These women could pretend to get into arguments the same way the wives on the real shows do except being WWE divas would allow them to have more all-out brawls than little cat fights.

I could see Alicia Fox being a total witch on the show, and Vickie being the mother hen type of character.

Ring Busters

2 of 11

This would be a Myth Busters type of show with a couple WWE superstars as hosts. What they could do is go around backstage and not only show some of the inner workings of WWE, but also dispel myths about the wrestling business.

There are plenty of things people think about wrestling that are false and this could be a great way to prove those people wrong.

Many people believe the ring to be very padded when in fact the surface is quite hard, especially when falling from 10 feet above. They could show what the ring is really made of and how it is not all fake.

Obviously the name of the show would be a play on Myth Busters, but it is also a little call out to the few times WWE rings have broken mid-match, whether it was planned or not.

Road Warriors

3 of 11

This show would be a behind the scenes style documentary showing what life on the road is like for WWE superstars.

The name is obviously a shout out to Hawk and Animal who went by The Road Warriors and Legion of Doom during their career.

Showing what these guys go through on daily basis would give people a greater appreciation for the sacrifices that wrestlers put themselves through in order to entertain us.

It could also show the difference between the life of a guy like Curt Hawkins and the life of a guy like John Cena.

Cena has his own tour bus he rides around in which can carry his wife and child with him while a guy like Hawkins has to rent cars and carpool with other guys to get to the next event.

It would show the amount of time it takes to get from one show to another, as well as how difficult it is to be home for only a day or two at a time.

I think this would be the kind of show that WWE could really benefit from. It would show wrestlers in the sympathetic light that they have not been portrayed in before.

Extreme Makover: WWE Gimmick Edition

4 of 11

This is a show that would be based more in fiction than reality. The show would be based around taking wrestlers who have a terrible gimmick or are just not over with the crowds and give them a makeover.

Maryse could be the host. She has that perfect, stuck-up and foreign way about her that reminds me of the awful host of The Millionaire Matchmaker.

She could have on other Divas as co hosts like Alicia Fox. Lay-Cool could be consultants and Kelly Kelly could participate in some way as well.

Guys like Tyler Reks and Curt Hawkins could get more exposure through a show like this. Having them come in and have their look changed by some Divas would provide for some decent potential comedy.

I could see guys like Sheamus and Wade Barrett going into the show trying to hit on the Divas, only to be pissed when they find out that they have to go through a spa treatment.

The possibilities are pretty much endless with this one because WWE has so many funny looking people with even stranger gimmicks.

Dirty Jobbing

5 of 11

This would basically be the same thing as Dirty Jobs, but with WWE superstars instead of the normal host. Some of these guys have been doing sports their whole life so having them do some other jobs could be entertaining.

Dirty Jobs is a show about some of the most disgusting occupations out there, but this would not have to be as extreme. Just having a guy like John Cena working at a Pinkberry would be kind of funny.

Imagine The Bella Twins working on a garbage truck for a day or Michael Cole having to give sponge baths to old people.

I think the best possible scenario would be Vickie at a sewage plant.

There are so many things they could do with something like this, and filming it would be really cheap since all they need is a camera and a camera man with a retailer willing to hire a superstar for a day.

Many businesses would jump at the chance.

Brawler Biographies

6 of 11

This would be a documentary style show which would go over the biographies of some of the greatest legends the sport has ever seen.

Today's fans have the Internet if they want to learn about wrestlers of the past, but how would they know who to look for if they don't know who used to wrestle?

This program would introduce today's younger audience to some of the greatest grapplers from years past in an educational and entertaining way.

The young fans of today may be familiar with legends like Stone Cold and Shawn Michaels because they are still around and fresh in our minds, but they have no exposure to some of the people who paved the way for those guys.

Legends like Harley Race and Buddy Rogers are rarely talked about on WWE television these days and to have a show that could document their great careers could be one of the more popular shows on the network.

There are plenty of people who would sit down and talk about their time in the business as well as some of the other people who we have lost.

I think that of all the possible shows WWE could put on their network this would be the kind of show I would most look forward to.

Wrestler Workout

7 of 11

Does anybody else remember when they used to have work out shows on in the early morning? I didn't think so, but they did.

At one point there were so many workout-themed shows that the Disney Channel even had one with Mickey Mouse.

Having WWE wrestlers and Divas lead a workout themed show would make sense since they are mostly in excellent shape. Some of them even have history as being trainers in different sports and in gyms.

Their knowledge of fitness combines with their star power could make for a very popular workout show. The days of people ordering tapes from Billy Blanks are over. Now it is time for the workout show to return.

Some of the best examples of people who could lead the show are Beth Phoenix, Dolph Ziggler, John Cena, Eve Torres, Jack Swagger and Triple H.

All of these people have athletic backgrounds, and Triple H even wrote a book about bodybuilding, so the credentials to be taken seriously as a trainer exist for these people.

I am not looking for a show where all they have is Brie Bella doing some cardio, although that would be nice to see too. What I am hoping for is a series that would focus on something different each week.

One week could focus on muscle building while the next would focus on endurance and so on. They could bring in celebrities and athletes from other sports as guests as well.

I don't think all WWE fans would watch something like this, but I think there is enough of an audience to make it successful.

The Ross Report

8 of 11

This would be a recap show that would air directly after Raw, SmackDown and every pay-per-view event. It would be similar to the Sportscenter show that Football and Basketball get on ESPN.

There are plenty of people within WWE who would be great in a panel setting talking about wrestling. Some of the legends that already work for WWE who could be hosts are Dean Malenko, Arn Anderson, Dusty Rhodes, Dustin Runnels, Jim Ross, Howard Finkel and Jerry Lawler.

This would be different from the roundtables WWE already does because it would be a recap of the events just witnessed instead of a history-based discussion.

They could tie this into the main shows as well as with interviews taken after matches being shown on the recap show and not on Raw and SmackDown.

WWE has a large number of people already on their payroll who could make a show like this not only work, but work well.

I am not sure if this kind of show has been tried by WWE in the past, but the short lived Livewire show WWE put on is totally different from what I am talking about.

They could even call it hosted by good ole JR as a way to keep him on TV without having him travel all over the place.

International Intrigue

9 of 11

This would be a show where WWE goes around the world and highlights wrestlers of other countries.

I know this is probably the most unlikely concept on the list since WWE hates giving press to any wrestling promotion other than themselves, but they could always change that position.

By featuring international stars they would not only expand their viewer's knowledge of wrestling, but it could also be a good launching point for new international stars the WWE hires.

If they had a show like this two years ago, it could have chronicled the road taken by Alberto Del Rio and Sin Cara on their way to the WWE.

The main focus of the show would be Europe, Japan and Mexico because those are the biggest markets for wrestling outside the US.

Imagine a show that showcased a different international superstar each week. One week they could choose someone from AAA in Mexico, the next would be someone from NJPW and the next could be from Irish Whip Wrestling in Ireland.

There are so many promotions around the world that they could easily focus on a different company or wrestler each week for years. Again, I know this is far-fetched but nothing is impossible, especially in the world of WWE.

Santino-Feld

10 of 11

Last year there was talk of WWE doing a sitcom which would star Santino Marella with Vladimir Kozlov as his best friend.

I thought this was a great idea, as Santino seems to have genuine comedy skills and Vladimir is so intimidating that him trying to be funny is even funnier than it should be.

I would love to see Santino do something outside the ring. He is a very funny individual who could bring in plenty of viewers both adult and adolescent.

The plot could be something along the lines of a fish-out-of-water story. He would be an Italian immigrant who moves to the US to try and make it big as a comedian.

They could bring back Vladimir as his "slightly more educated on America" roommate who tries to show Santino how to live in the US with hilarious results.

There is plenty of fodder to make a good sitcom starring Santino; the WWE just needs quality writers to make sure it ends up more like Seinfeld and less like Two and a Half Men.

(I know that Two and a Half Men is the highest rated comedy right now, but I don't care. I still think it is garbage.)

On a side note, when I just googled "WWE sitcom" the first picture that popped up was Santino.

The End

So there you have it. Ten shows I feel would fit well on a WWE channel.

What kinds of shows would you like to see WWE put on their upcoming network?
