WWE Raw: Were the Muppets the Worst Guests in History?

The Doctor Chris MuellerNov 2, 2011

To answer my own question, yes, the Muppets were the worst guests in the history of Raw. I am sure there are plenty of people who disagree with me, that is their right, but I can't believe what I saw on Monday.

WWE is PG these days and they want to appeal to more kids. That's great, but they need to remember that adults not only watch this stuff too, but they are the one's spending all the money going into Vince's pocket.

WWE should not try and pretend they are something they aren't. They are a show about people beating each other up. The concept of kid friendly violence has become more controversial in the last twenty years so I am even more shocked this is happening.

When I was a kid I could turn on the TV and within a few clicks of the remote I could see Wyle E Coyote trying to kill road runner or Elmer Fudd trying to Kill Bugs Bunny. Yogi was essentially a thief and Scooby Doo was a drug addicted dog with a stoner companion.

Nowadays kids have Dora the Explorer and Bob the Builder. Children's TV has changed, and yet the Muppets are still the kings of children's characters. So why would they be associated with violence?

I held my opinions back until after seeing the actual show because I had hopes that maybe they could be incorporated in an interesting way. Instead what I got were wrestlers acting as if these Muppets were real people.

The only part of the Muppets involvement that I enjoyed was when Sheamus claimed a family relation to one Muppet and the old guys in the balcony. Besides that I thought the use of the Muppets was terrible.

Hornswoggle got some screen time of course, because he is basically a cartoon character so having him socialize with them made sense.

I am actually a little shocked that John Cena didn't have that much interaction with them given his popularity with kids.

One thing that Vince McMahon knows is that kids drive a large portion of the spending in this country by influencing their parents, so marketing to kids is a very smart move. The use of kids characters however is not something WWE should be doing.

Having guests on Raw can be good for business, but by featuring the Muppets WWE is sending mixed signals to it's viewers.

Maybe I just yearn for the days of Stephanie McMahon getting nailed to a giant cross, Torrie Wilson fighting Stacy Kiebler in a bra and panties match or the Undertaker burying someone alive. I guess I am just old fashioned that way.
