San Diego Chargers vs. Kansas City Chiefs: Philip Rivers and Co. Show the Truth

Zachary D. RymerNov 1, 2011

The latest episode of Monday Night Football was all too appropriate for Halloween. From start to finish, it was a horror movie.

In the end, the Kansas City Chiefs played the role of the final girl, knocking off the big, bad San Diego Chargers in overtime by the final of 23-20. The Chiefs were essentially Jamie Lee Curtis, and they only survived because the Chargers just didn't keep up the pursuit as well as Michael Myers.

If you're not into classic horror movies, the rough translation is that the Chargers sucked. Plain and simple. Outside of making horror movie references, there's no other way to say it.

If you were lucky enough to miss out on last night's game, all you really need to know is that the Chargers were lucky to be in a position to win the game late in the fourth quarter. They committed four turnovers and survived on Nick Novak field goals for almost the entire game, but they had the ball deep in Kansas City territory with less than a minute to go.

That's when Philip Rivers fumbled the snap, killing the Chargers' promising drive like Alice killed Jason Voorhees' mother at the end of Friday the 13th.

Next thing you knew, the game went to overtime, the Chargers went three-and-out in their first possession, and the Chiefs drove down the field and set Ryan Succop up for a game-winning chip shot.

This tweet from Michael Strahan just about said it all:

Alas, I'm afraid they were quite serious. As poorly as the Chargers played on Monday night, they weren't entirely out of character.

Let's be honest. They may have a solid 4-3 record, but the Chargers just haven't played well this season. They have decent numbers across the board on both sides of the ball, but the stench of underachievement has hung over them in every single game they've played this season.

The obvious goat is Philip Rivers, who didn't play well at all. Outside of his late gaffe, he also threw two interceptions and failed to throw a touchdown pass. One of those would have looked very nice next to his 369 passing yards.

Instead, Rivers fell flat, and jokes like this one were general on Twitter:

Cold. Very cold.

If you'll permit me to go out on a limb, Monday night's loss wasn't all Rivers' fault. He definitely could have helped the Chargers avoid a bad loss, but blame for the loss rests elsewhere as well. Norv Turner proved once again that he just doesn't know what to do when the chips are down, and some shoddy defense resulted in an early 10-0 hole that the Chargers had to dig their way out of.

All in all, the Chargers that we saw on Monday night looked all too familiar. In watching them, there is no denying that they are supremely talented, and it's not like they slack off on a consistent basis. Their problem seems to be a focus problem. There are times when the entire team seems to forget where it is and what it's doing, and that's when bad things tend to happen.

On the bright side, the Chargers are still too good to wither up and let themselves be blown out of the AFC West race. They've lost two games in a row, yes, but it's hard to see them going on any kind of lengthy losing streak.

Instead, it's more likely that the Chargers will be up and down, just as they have been so far this season.

Check that. Just as they have been for several seasons now. That's just how they roll.

And that's not a good thing.
