BCS Rankings: Ranking the Teams Most Likely To End the SEC Title Streak
The SEC has been the dominant conference in college football for the past five years, and there hasn’t been a team that has been able to come along and break their string of five consecutive national championships.
SEC fans didn’t need a reason to be any more pompous, but now that their conference has won five straight titles, most of them have just become unbearable.
For the sake of the rest of the college football nation outside of the South, we can only hope that a team can finally step up and shut the holier-than-thou SEC folks up.
Here’s a look at the five teams that have the best chance to stop the SEC’s streak of dominance this season.
1. Oklahoma State Cowboys
1 of 6Currently sitting in the No. 3 hole of the BCS standings, Oklahoma State is in prime position to make it to the national title game if the Cowboys can win out and beat No. 6 Oklahoma in the Bedlam game at the end of the year.
As it looks right now, the Pokes would likely match up with the winner of the LSU-Alabama game if both teams win out.
Led by the deadly trio of QB Brandon Weeden, WR Justin Blackmon and RB Joseph Randle, the Oklahoma State offense is one of the most dangerous and explosive units in the country.
The offense ranks second in the country in scoring offense and fourth in total offense, averaging 50 points and 555 yards per game.
The Cowboys have the type of high-powered attack that would be enough to give LSU’s, Alabama’s or any other defense in the country a run for their money.
2. Stanford Cardinal
2 of 6Stanford survived a wild, triple-overtime scare at USC this past weekend, and depending on how you look at it, that’s either good or bad.
On one hand, it’s great that the Cardinal could rally in the face of adversity and come away victorious, but it’s obvious that this team showed some cracks, as the Trojans rolled up 48 points on the defense.
Still, Stanford is in great shape at 8-0, with only two really tough tests left on the schedule against Oregon and Notre Dame.
If the Cardinal run the table, win the Pac-12 championship game and find a way to New Orelans, it would be fun to see how star quarterback Andrew Luck would fare on college football’s biggest stage.
3. Boise State Broncos
3 of 6The “Boise State could never handle SEC competition” folks had to swallow their words when the Broncos thoroughly outplayed the Georgia Bulldogs right in their own backyard on opening weekend.
Admittedly, it’s Boise State’s only real notable win of the season at this point, but the Broncos have everything it takes to make a run at an undefeated season. If they can get some help, they may finally get their chance to prove themselves in the national championship game.
It would be quite a sight to see QB Kellen Moore go up against a defense like LSU’s or Alabama’s with college football's biggest prize on the line.
4. Oklahoma Sooners
4 of 6Just when everyone was ready to dismiss Oklahoma as a pretender, the Sooners came out and made an example of Kansas State, as they stomped all over the Wildcats 58-17 in Manhattan on Saturday.
This Oklahoma team may have played lousy and uninspired in a loss to Texas Tech, but this is still one of the most talented teams in America. If they can somehow find a way to get to the national title game, they could compete with any team in the country because of the type of depth and star power they have on both sides of the ball.
5. Oregon Ducks
5 of 6With QB Darron Thomas and RB LaMichael James both returning from injuries, Oregon is once again loaded with dangerous playmakers on offense.
The Ducks will have a great opportunity to make a statement against No. 4 Stanford on Nov. 12, just as long as they can survive a tough test at Washington this weekend.
If the Ducks can beat Stanford, run the table and finish 12-1, they’ll have a strong case to make it into the national championship game, given that their only loss of the season is a Week 1 loss to No. 1 LSU.
Honorable Mention: Nebraska Cornhuskers
6 of 6One team to keep an eye on in the coming weeks is Nebraska.
While the Cornhuskers still lack a consistent passing offense, they have one of the most powerful rushing attacks in the country and their defense is starting to play like the dominating force we expected them to be before the season started.
If Nebraska can run the table, win the Big Ten title and finish 12-1, the Cornhuskers might have an outside shot of making it to the title game.
