College Football Recruiting 2012: The Top Uncommitted Prospect at Every Position
Time for another edition of "State of the board," or the best available at each position.
We're going to give you a quick rundown of the top player at each position on the high school recruiting board who has not made their commitment yet.
Each position has had some top prospects go ahead and pledge, while there remains some excellent prospects still mulling their options.
An interesting aspect to many players on this list is that most of them figure to still be a ways away from deciding.
Come check out the top players still uncommitted at each position.
ATH: Nelson Agholor
1 of 11Nelson Agholor may be the most athletic player in Florida this year, and perhaps the entire country. At 6'2", 180 pounds, he makes play after play all night long.
He can be a factor at safety, receiver, running back or corner. His best spot may be at safety, but you can't count him out as a receiver. He's dynamic with the ball in his hands but, then again, he could be an All-American safety.
Florida, USC, Texas, Miami, Florida State, Georgia and Notre Dame are in the hunt.
CB: Tracy Howard
2 of 11At 6'0", 175 pounds, Tracy Howard has the length that many teams are looking for in corners these days. Receivers are getting bigger, so corners need to as well.
Howard also has solid coverage skills, and can come out of his backpedal easily and fluidly. He can carry receivers deep and will sniff around in the run game as well.
It appeared Florida and Miami are the main two, but Howard says he is still getting recruited hard by Florida State, USC, LSU, UCLA, Alabama, Notre Dame and West Virginia.
DS: Landon Collins
3 of 11Landon Collins is a 5-star recruit and one of the top players in the country, as he can play both safety and outside linebacker.
At 6'0", 210 pounds, Collins shows to be uber-instinctive in the box, physical against the run and have great range.
He's productive in space in coverage, showing an ability to be a factor in the zone due to his awareness. He always finds a way to the ball and hates getting caught in traffic.
Alabama, LSU and Texas appear to be the main three for him.
LB: Kwon Alexander
4 of 11At 6'2", 210 pounds, Kwon Alexander is a fantastic linebacker prospect. He has tremendous play speed and range, and will be a three-down defender in college.
He projects well at WILL, but I think he can also play SAM in a 4-3 scheme, due to his ability to carry tight ends around the field in coverage.
Alabama, Florida State, Auburn, LSU and Oregon are his top five.
DE: Noah Spence
5 of 11Noah Spence is the top pure pass-rusher in the country, and easily has the quickest first two steps in America. He flies off the ball and gets after quarterbacks with tenacity, passion and sheer speed.
At 6'4", 245 pounds, he has been compared to Dwight Freeney, though he is a bit longer and taller than the 6'1" Freeney.
Notre Dame, Florida, USC, Rutgers, Penn State, UNC and NC State are his top seven.
DT: Eddie Goldman
6 of 11Eddie Goldman is a 6'5", 305 pound defensive tackle that has "special" written all over him.
He has the quickness to jump blockers at the snap, the strength to toss and shed and anchor ability to stop double teams in their tracks and make a mess in the middle.
He wants to play 4-3 tackle, but some teams like him at the 3-4 nose. He can play both well in my opinion, and could even play 3-4 end. He isn't a wow-you type of athlete who will chase in pursuit, but Goldman does have a bit of range.
Florida State, Cal, Auburn, Alabama, Maryland, Miami and Clemson are his top seven.
OL: Andrus Peat
7 of 11At 6'7", 300 pounds, Andrus Peat is one of the top line prospects in the country and will be a franchise left tackle.
He reminds me a lot of USC left tackle Matt Kalil coming out of high school. Sound in his technique, smart, patient and savvy in pass protection, Peat is an elite offensive lineman.
Nebraska, Stanford, Florida State and Texas are the core four among others.
TE: Ron Thompson
8 of 11You could make a case for Ron Thompson to be listed as a wide receiver, and he can double as both. It's just that his 6'4", 215-pound frame likely will grow into a tight end.
He creates nightmares for deep middle players, as he can play the in-line tight end spot, flex out to the slot or play wide receiver. Thompson has great hands and can catch all around his body.
Indiana, Michigan and Syracuse look like the main three in the race, but watch out for Illinois.
WR: Dorial Green-Beckham
9 of 11Dorial Green-Beckham is a rare player and a prospect with a high ceiling. He's also been extremely productive during his career already.
At 6'6", 220 pounds, Green-Beckham has the hands, speed, separation quickness, catch-in-crowd ability and playmaking talent to become a dominant receiver in college.
Missouri, Alabama, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Auburn and Texas have all seen him on campus this year and a final list likely won't come until after the season.
RB: Keith Marshall
10 of 11Keith Marshall is a terror to defenses because he's a prime-time, home-run threat with the ball.
The 5'11", 190-pounder has great breakaway speed, explosiveness, quickness and elusiveness. I liken him to Eagles running back LeSean McCoy, and feel he should be able to step in right away as a true freshman and make some dazzling plays.
That could be at Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Notre Dame or a few other schools. We'll know by December.
QB: Gunner Kiel
11 of 11He's back on the market, as Gunner Kiel decommitted from the Indiana Hoosiers recently.
Kiel has very good accuracy and command of his current high school offense. He is a consistent 65 percent or higher completion rate passer who knows where to go with the ball in his pre-snap reads.
At 6'4" and 200 pounds, Kiel can make throws on the run and get upfield with his legs. He's a solid running threat, but Kiel likes to dissect defenses from the pocket.
Oklahoma, Alabama, Notre Dame, Indiana, LSU and Florida have all been mentioned.
