BCS Standings: Oregon Ducks and More Contenders Being Held Back by Computers
One of the biggest cases against the BCS standings is the computer aspect and how the general public has no idea how that portion of the rankings is calculated. That's especially pertinent for teams that are impressing voters but failing to make an impact with the emotionless formulas.
Here are three teams that aren't getting much respects from the computers in Week 10.
No. 8 Oregon Ducks
While Oregon is ranked sixth by both human polls (Harris and USA Today), the Ducks are only the 13th-best team in the nation according to the computers. One program even ranks them as low as No. 16, which is probably based on Oregon's questionable schedule so far.
The good news for the Ducks is they will have three opportunities to rectify that situation in the month of November. Games at Washington and Stanford as well as a visit from USC will provide an ample schedule boost should they emerge victorious in all three games.
No. 10 Nebraska Cornhuskers
Nebraska picked up a key win over Michigan State on Saturday, but it didn't do as much for the computers as they would have hoped. Even though the Cornhuskers are No. 9 in both polls, they have placement as deep as 18th from the programs.
They are tied for the Legends division lead in the Big Ten, so there is another BCS route if necessary, but an at-large bid is still possible. As long as they win road games against Penn State and Michigan, there's a nice boost to be had.
No. 17 Michigan State Spartans
The aforementioned Spartans took a tumble in all the polls this week, but more so in the formula standings. Michigan State ranks 16th and 17th in the Harris and USA Today rankings respectively, but are No. 20 according to the number crunchers.
An early-season loss to Notre Dame could come back to haunt them if the Spartans are unable to secure the Big Ten's automatic bid. That illustrates just how fickle the rankings can be, especially when there have been so many shocking results in recent weeks.
