Why Tim Tebow Will Make an Awesome FB for His Next NFL Team

Andrea HangstOct 30, 2011

As each week of the Tim Tebow experiment wears on for the Denver Broncos, it's becoming more and more evident that the quarterback's detractors are being proven right.

His throwing motion is worrisome—not only does it produce wildly inaccurate passes, but it allows ample time for opposing defenses to get their hands on him.

While some of his issues stem from being thrown from one kind of fire (generated by the media and his fans) into another (actual, live games) in the blink of an eye, most rest solely on Tebow's skills as a quarterback.

Through the three games in which he's played (with two starts), Tebow has completed just 25 of 71 of his pass attempts for a total of 412 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.

A majority of those yards came in the fourth quarter of all three games; the first, he was inserted into the game after Kyle Orton failed to produce, and in the following two he managed only to disappoint until near the very end of each contest. Most telling is that he's not had a completion percentage better than 48.1, which is no way for a starting quarterback to play the game for long.

However, he's far more successful when he runs the ball. He's rushed 25 times for 160 yards so far this season, with one touchdown and one lost fumble, averaging over six yards per carry. If Tebow were a fullback rather than a quarterback, those would be incredibly impressive statistics, the kind that would guarantee him a starting job.

The NFL is all about examining an individual player's strengths and putting him in the position that he can best maximize them. Granted, though it's less common to switch a player from quarterback to running back than it is from defensive end to linebacker, that kind of flexibility is something Tebow's future coach, whoever he may be, should be prepared to embrace with him.

There's little doubt that this may be Tebow's last chance in Denver. He's clearly not the answer the team needs at the quarterback position, and considering his performance in his two starts, he may be sitting on the bench for the Broncos before the end of November.

If he wants to be a starter in the NFL, it's not going to be as a quarterback. There's far too much work he needs to do to get to that point, and I don't see another team willing to be patient enough to do that necessary work.

However, he could start immediately for any team willing to line him up at fullback, and he could be extremely successful at it. He's tall enough, large enough, fast and elusive enough to fill that position well. I know that Tebow doesn't see himself as anything other than a quarterback, but if he wants to be in the NFL much longer, he will have to adapt.

What Tebow, and his supporters, need to understand is that it's not a demotion should a coach want Tebow to switch positions. What matters most, or what should matter most, is that a player be successful at what he's best at. Tebow isn't very good at passing the ball, but he can have significant impact as a fullback.
