BCS Standings: Boise State's Fiesta Bowl Dreams Becoming a Reality
The fourth-ranked Boise State Broncos didn't play in Week 9, but their BCS hopes improved nonetheless.
The Broncos find themselves in a very familiar position this season. They are undefeated, have a cupcake schedule and need plenty of teams to stumble so they can sneak into a BCS bowl.
Luckily for them, big-name schools are dropping every Saturday.
Last week, then-No. 3 Oklahoma lost to Texas Tech and fell to No. 9 in the standings. Yesterday, No. 5 Clemson and No. 8 Kansas State got beat convincingly.
In Week 10, No. 1 LSU takes on No. 3 Alabama. Whichever team loses that game will certainly get leapfrogged by Boise State, at least for a little while.
And on Nov. 12, undefeated Stanford and one-loss Oregon face each other. The loser of that game won't have a strong enough schedule to move ahead of Boise State, assuming that team stays undefeated.
So the Broncos are in the same situation they are always in: waiting for highly ranked schools to get beat every week and leaving the BCS door open for Kellen Moore and Co.
All they have to do is win out and they will be in prime position for a Fiesta Bowl bid.
If Stanford and LSU finish the season undefeated as well, they will definitely play in the championship game. The same could be true for Alabama if it can stay unbeaten.
I know it's frustrating for Boise State fans, but undefeated teams in better conferences will always finish the season with a higher ranking.
No matter how impressive the Broncos are on the field, their weak strength of schedule will continue to doom them. Until their is some sort of playoff system, they will get screwed out of a national title shot every season.
For now, they'll have to take solace in the fact that the Fiesta Bowl is theirs for the taking.
