UFC 137 Results: Nick Diaz's Most Memorable Fights

Vince CareyOct 30, 2011

As Nick Diaz was prancing around the Octagon celebrating his victory over BJ Penn, it was obvious that this was a fight that no one will forget anytime soon.

Defeating Penn was arguably the biggest accomplishment in Diaz’s career and his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan is already one of the defining moments in his career.

In short, last night's main event gave us some of the best Diaz in the Octagon and on the microphone, which is really all we could have asked for.

Diaz has had some memorable bouts in his fighting career, but last night's has to rank up there with the best of them.

Takanori Gomi

1 of 4

Going into his Pride 33 fight against Takanori Gomi, Diaz was a huge underdog.

Gomi was considered one of the best lightweight fighters in the world, and Diaz was barely over .500 during his UFC run prior to the bout.

The fight is considered a classic, as both fighters threw wild punches throughout, landing frequently.

After an exhausting first round, Diaz’s unbelievable cardio helped him take control in the second and he capitalized on a Gomi take-down by locking in a gogoplata.

The rarely-seen submission earned Diaz even more respect amongst the MMA community, and although his win has since been overturned due to an extreme amount of marijuana in his system during the fight, the fight is still regarded as a classic.

KJ Noons

2 of 4

Diaz lost a fight to KJ Noons at an EliteXC event back in 2007 by doctor’s stoppage, and he had wanted revenge on the cocky Hawaiian ever since.

He finally got his chance almost three full years later in a Strikeforce bout for his welterweight championship.

Diaz and Noons went to war for five solid rounds, with Diaz breaking the latter’s jaw in the fight. Diaz went on to win by unanimous decision.

Paul Daley

3 of 4

Earlier this year, Diaz competed under the Strikeforce banner for the last time when he fought Paul Daley.

Many experts predicted Diaz would attempt to take the fight to the ground due to Daley’s power in his hands and suspect submission defense, but Diaz wasn’t having any of that.

Instead he stood up and threw leather with Daley until one of them went down.

Both fighters scored multiple knockdowns in the fight, but eventually Diaz landed the shot to end the fight.

BJ Penn

4 of 4

Last night was exciting as hell, and it was really a one-sided beat-down for two thirds of the fight.

Diaz looked awesome against Penn, out-working him on the feet over and over again.

The first round was reasonably close, with Penn tagging Diaz a few times and scoring a nice take-down to win the round.

But the second round was brutal, as Diaz found his rhythm and started landing combinations at will and busted up Penn as badly as we’ve ever seen.

Penn looked exhausted going into the third round and Diaz just kept pouring it on, winning much like he did in the second.

Dominating BJ Penn is unheard of and other than Diaz only one other man has done it: Georges St-Pierre, the next man on Diaz’s hit list.
