UFC 137 Results: Nick Diaz Is in Georges St-Pierre's Head
Not even 24 hours after Nick Diaz told the world that he thought that Georges St-Pierre was “scared” and had faked an injury to get out of his fight at UFC 137, Diaz has gotten what he wanted, and that’s a title fight against GSP.
Diaz has been publicly calling out St-Pierre for a long time, but since their fight at UFC 137 was cancelled due to Diaz missing press obligations, he has grown more vocal about St-Pierre’s apparent desire to duck him.
Apparently GSP has heard enough, as Dana White had this to say at the UFC 137 Post-Fight Press Conference.
"I've known Georges St-Pierre since 2004. He's one of the nicest guys I've ever met, and he's always exactly the same no matter what the situation is, no matter who he's fighting. Since 2004, I've never seen him like he was tonight. Georges St-Pierre flipped out tonight after Nick Diaz was in the ring, and Nick needs motivation. He's got it. He's going to fight Georges St-Pierre."
It sounds like Diaz has done what no one else has been able to do: get St-Pierre angry.
This is somewhat unexpected, as GSP is usually one of the most level-headed fighters in the sport.
He’s endured trash talk and greasing accusations from BJ Penn and an entire season of The Ultimate Fighter, where Josh Koscheck tried to get under his skin and showed little to no reaction, but Diaz questioning his willingness to fight has lit a fire under him.
Diaz may have just been trying to get a fight, but he now will have to experience something that no other fighter has, an angry GSP going after him.
This is an interesting new angle to an already exciting fight, as an emotional fighter can sometimes be an aggressive fighter.
If Diaz has any doubts about his ability to defeat St-Pierre, it would likely be if he can withstand GSP’s wrestling.
Diaz is a fighter at heart and he lives to get into brawls, but GSP’s conservative wrestling is the perfect way to counter Diaz’s aggressive forward movement and boxing.
Diaz needs St-Pierre to suddenly become a different fighter, one that won’t hesitate to stand and bang with him, and getting GSP angry might be the only way to do that. St-Pierre may still take Diaz out on the feet, but at least Diaz made the champion fight his fight.
There is no doubt that Diaz has gotten to GSP like no other fighter has, and it will be interesting to see how it affects St-Pierre during their fight.
If he somehow is able to put it into the back of his mind, St-Pierre will be able to stick to his game plan and neutralize any offense that Diaz presents.
But if Diaz has pushed his buttons to the point that he wants to go out and hurt him, the fight could become a war quickly, and suddenly the fight could become a lot closer to even.
Nick Diaz has done exactly what we wanted to do leading up to this fight. Now all that remains to be seen is if an emotional Georges St-Pierre is a beatable George St-Pierre.
