Why Todd Haley's Job Shouldn't Be Saved by a Winning Record

Jon DoveOct 30, 2011

NFL coaches are evaluated by their ability to win football games. However, there are times when a winning record isn't enough to save a coach's job. It is always a shock to see a winning coach lose his job, but it does happen from time to time.

The Kansas City Chiefs started the season with several dismal performances, which were capped off by a season-ending injury to Jamaal Charles. These embarrassing losses had many believing that we could see an early coaching change. However, Todd Haley was able to hang on and right the ship.

However, his recent winning streak might not be enough to save his job. Haley has a stubborn personality, often clashing with players and management. He recently had a sideline spat with starting quarterback Matt Cassel. These type of explosions give off the perception of chaos and disorganization.

A head coach needs to show restraint and maturity. He needs to lead his team, while also keeping a positive locker room. A coach whodoesn't relate well to his players will find himself in tough situations. Haley has had several sideline arguments, including one with Anquan Boldin when both were in Arizona.

I want to point to Eric Mangini and the way he was shuffled out of New York and Cleveland. Mangini is considered to have a very strong personality. He is very demanding of his players and doesn't really foster a positive environment.

His hard-nosed style is something that alienates players and management. However, he somehow finds a way to win football games and get the most out of his teams.

Is Todd Haley on the hot seat? Maybe not, but that doesn't mean he should be exempt from fostering a more positive environment. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out.
