Week 8 Fantasy Football Rankings: Who Are the Worst WRs?

John RozumOct 28, 2011

You would think that with the NFL becoming so heavily reliant on the passing game that it wouldn't matter so much as to which WRs you start in fantasy football.

Well on the contrary, the WRs who under-perform are subject to having a bad QB under center. Because no matter how much talent a receiver may have, he can't produce results without a QB who plays well on a consistent basis.

4. Mike Thomas, Jaguars (at Texans)

Right now Mike Thomas is the Jaguars leading WR. The only problem is, Jacksonville ranks No. 32 in passing offense and Blaine Gabbert is a rookie.

This week the Jags visit the Texans in a crucial AFC South matchup. Unfortunately for Thomas and the Jacksonville passing game, Houston is solid across the board defensively (Top 10 against the pass and rush).

If you have Thomas, bench him for someone with a more favorable matchup because the Texans will blanket coverage while getting pressure on Gabbert all game long.

3. Brandon Marshall, Dolphins (at Giants)

Even though he's by far Miami's best offensive weapon, Brandon Marshall has been significantly underachieving this season. Now, it's not his fault. He just happens to be on a team with no legit QB.

Sure he'll get around 50 or 60 receiving yards, but that's nowhere near enough to give you an edge. The Giants will be doubling him up most of the time.

Had Marshall still been in Denver he would not be on this list. That said, Marshall should only get the nod to start in last resort situations because Matt Moore isn't going to increase his numbers any more than Chad Henne (which wasn't impressive by any means on a per game basis).

2. Reggie Wayne, Colts (at Titans)

Against what is considered the Saints defensive weakness (coverage), Colts WR Reggie Wayne only mustered up three catches for 36 yards on Sunday night.

This week Indy goes on the road once again, but this time against divisional foe Tennessee, who is about as good as New Orleans when it comes to pass defense.

So unless Curtis Painter becomes someone other than Curtis Painter, Reggie Wayne isn't going to produce more than 50 yards (best-case scenario). If the Colts have any success, it will be on the ground.

1. Doug Baldwin, Seahawks (vs Bengals)

The Seahawks have the No. 28 passing offense and last week team-leading WR Doug Baldwin had no catches on three targets in Cleveland.

As for Week 8, it only gets more difficult as the 4-2 Bengals and their Top 5 defense come visit the Great Northwest. Therefore, don't expect jack squat from Baldwin because Cincinnati's suffocating defense will force many three-and-outs for Seattle.

It's apparent that neither Charlie Whitehurst or Tarvaris Jackson is the answer, and until coach Pete Carroll gets a QB with potential, Doug Baldwin isn't going to be the only frustrated receiver.
