Jaguars vs. Texans: 8 Things We Learned from Jacksonville's 24-14 Loss
Six days removed from their best defensive showing of the season, the Jacksonville Jaguars summarily came out and showed again that their offense is at least two steps behind a defense that did not look as sharp this week in a 24-14 loss to the Houston Texans.
The offense, slow in developing throughout the season, needed time to get going. In the end, it proved again to be the downfall of the team.
Rookie Blaine Gabbert still has not been able to put together a complete game, this time throwing two interceptions against a much improved Titans defense.
Jacksonville goes into its bye week at 2-6 this season. And now, with the break, there will be calls for head coach Jack Del Rio to be removed after a tumultuous start to the season.
Here are a few things we learned about the team as the game progressed and as the team finally gets a breather in what can only be described as a disappointing season so far.
8. The Team Could Not Get It Going on Offense at the Start
1 of 8This is a team that still has not found any momentum on offense.
The passing game was slow.
The running game was slow.
Gabbert showed in one series that he took command of the team and then faltered.
7. Gabbert Is Not an NFL Quarterback... Yet.
2 of 8After the game against Baltimore, offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said Gabbert had regressed during the game.
This may have been the second game in a row Koetter saw his rookie passer take steps back in development.
Gabbert threw two interceptions in the game.
He had thrown two all season in the six previous games he had played in.
6. MJD Put the Ball on the Ground Again
3 of 8What is wrong with Maurice Jones-Drew?
After his 'fumbl-itis' against the Baltimore Ravens, Jones-Drew, who came into the game as the AFC's top-rated rusher, put the ball on the carpet again.
Although he recovered his mistake, it shows there is something mentally unsure about the Jaguars main weapon.
5. No Real State of Urgency...Again!
4 of 8This team plods along and it does not matter what the situation is.
The good teams in the NFL realize deficiencies and then make adjustments.
Gabbert, Koetter, Del Rio....who is the leader? This team needs to march down the field, not move at a snail's pace.
4. Jason Hill Scores Again
5 of 8With different, albeit average, playmakers on this team, Jason Hill has proven to be Gabbert's safety blanket.
Hill, a free agent signed during the season last year from San Francisco, has caught three touchdowns in the last four games.
You would think he would get more looks from Gabbert, but he is not seeing the ball more.
3. Will the Bye Week Lead to Change?
6 of 8The defense seemed to regress this week as well.
Will Koetter and defensive coordinator Mel Tucker make changes to their units to try and improve play?
How much input will Jack Del Rio have in these changes and what will he recommend to get this team back to winning football games?
The defense recovered two fumbles and sacked Houston's Matt Schaub in the game, but Jacoby Jones, Kevin Walter and the tight ends opened up big seams in the defense and the Texans runners got decent yardage against this "vaunted" run defense.
Changes are needed.
2. Who Does Wayne Weaver Have on Speed Dial?
7 of 8Would he make a change?
Bill Cowher swore on television today he was staying in the booth?
Jon Gruden looks happy on ESPN.
Jeff Fisher would not be welcomed in Jacksonville.
The only coach on the current staff that may be considered for the head job is Mel Tucker.
We have to wait and see.
1. The Indianapolis Colts Are Up Next
8 of 8The Jaguars can take solace in the fact they come back and play the winless Colts in Indianapolis on November 13.
They then play the Cleveland Browns on the 20th—two games the team can win before facing the Texans again at home.
There is no momentum and for all the talk about this being a team close to contending, they regressed this week after a great win Monday night.
Maybe the coaches don't see what the fans see, or they are not willing to admit it.
