10 Things the Jacksonville Jaguars Need to Watch for Against the Houston Texans

David LevinOct 28, 2011

If you haven't heard, the Jacksonville Jaguars shocked the world, or in this case the NFL, when they beat the Baltimore Ravens.

Stop the presses.

While the win cooled some of the heat under the seat of Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio, by no means did it solve all the problems that still exist within the offense.

The Jaguars squandered two opportunities in the red zone, settling for a field goal on one of them. The other was fumbled away when Maurice Jones-Drew put the ball on the grass at the one.

And the passing game still needs a little push, as Blaine Gabbert is being asked to manage games rather than lose them.

At some point, the rookie will be asked to win a game or two for the team.

Now comes the Houston Texans, a team that beat the snot out of Tennessee last week.

The Jaguars defense will have to come up big again this week.

Here are other things to look for if the Jaguars are to post a two-game winning streak.

10. Stick to Last Week's Game Plan

1 of 10

The defense came out fired up and set the tone for the entire game.

No need to change that philosophy.

Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker put together a great game plan that kept the Ravens' running game off-balance and put pressure on quarterback Joe Flacco.

The same speed and timing must be used to stop the Texans.

9. Don't Fail When Opportunity Knocks

2 of 10

The Jaguars have had opportunities to score touchdowns when they settled for field goals and fumbles.

This has been an issue all season long.

When the team is in the red zone, they need six points, not three.

8. Blaine Gabbert Needs to Hit His Receivers

3 of 10

Gabbert has issues with the short passing game. He seems to get nervous and looks scared at times.

He needs to be calm and hit receivers in stride. Just relax and let the game unfold.

7. The Team Cannot Rely on Josh Scobee

4 of 10

The kicker is one of the best weapons in the NFL, but counting on him every game to bail the team out will not work.

Sooner or later, he will miss a kick.

And the sad thing is, the coach will look like the world just collapsed.

If they score touchdowns, then Scobee doesn't have the world placed on his shoulders.

6. Where Is Marcedes Lewis?

5 of 10

He is M.I.A. in terms of his play with the Jags. He signed a huge contract in the offseason, and now he has only 10 catches all year.

You would think with a rookie at quarterback, Lewis would be a big safety net, but it hasn't happened yet.

5. Play Just as Tough on the Road as at Home

6 of 10

There is a caution for a letdown this week, and it just may happen. Or, the team will surprise you.

Either way, remember that this road game is all the more important because it is a division game.

4. Control the Clock

7 of 10

The Jaguars did a great job of making sure clock management was on their side last week.

If the team uses the running game and lets Gabbert work on the short passing game, they will use the clock to their advantage again, keeping their defense off the field.

3. Stop Arian Foster

8 of 10

I know it sounds easy, but they need to do just that. They concentrated on stopping Ray Rice last week, and it should be a focus of the front seven this week.

Stopping Foster forces Matt Schaub into passing, which leads to errors.

2. Stop Kevin Walter

9 of 10

Walter has been the Jaguar killer over the years.

While the team may get Andre Johnson back this week, Walter is the guy, along with Owen Daniels, that the team must contain over the middle and along the sidelines.

The secondary will be busy this week.

1. Play Each Game Like It Was Your Last

10 of 10

The sand is still slipping through the hourglass. There are no titles yet, no playoff appearances.

You still have ONLY two wins.

Keep fighting like your jobs depend on it.
