NCAA Finally Makes the Right Call by Adopting Stipend for Student Athletes

Matt FaulconerOct 27, 2011

It took years, but the NCAA has finally gotten the ball rolling in the right direction when it comes to paying student athletes.

According to the official website of the NCAA, schools will now be able to offer student athletes a $2,000 stipend. Here are the official comments, according to Michelle Brutlag Hosick,

"

"The Board also adopted legislation that addresses the miscellaneous costs of attending college. Student-athletes who receive full athletics scholarships or get other school financial aid will have the opportunity to receive additional athletics aid (or other institutional aid, including use of the Student-Athlete Opportunity Fund) up to the full cost of attendance or $2,000, whichever is less."

The decision was a logical one that the NCAA should have made years ago.

NCAA President Mark Emmert spoke about the historic changes passed by the committee both on the academic and financial front.

There are tons of student athletes who come from low-income homes that could desperately use this money to help with the costs of attending school.

The school already pays for housing on campus, tuition and meal plans, but that is simply not enough. Anyone that has attended college knows there are a ton of extra expenses associated with attending school. From school supplies to traveling back and forth to visit your family, there are tons of extra costs you must pay to attend college.

This is the reason that kids leave school early for a professional career, even though they will not be a high draft pick, or accept money from agents.

This might not stop all of that, but this is without a doubt a step in the right direction. This will certainly ease the pain of the financial burden that low-income families have once their son or daughter heads off to college. Some families simply cannot afford to even travel to watch their child play and can barely afford the travel expenses for their child to come home.

If the NCAA is able to increase that stipend a bit more in the future, we may have a lot fewer NCAA violations to investigate.

It took long enough, but the NCAA made the right call this time around.
