UFC 140 Fight Card: 6 Famous Techniques Steven Seagal Will Teach Lyoto Machida
Martial-artist-turned-actor Steven Seagal has made waves in 2011 by being in the corner of two of the top fighters in the UFC, Lyoto Machida and Anderson Silva. The 59-year-old has been training with the fighters for a few years now, but his presence has suddenly become mainstream following his post-fight interviews after UFC 126 and UFC 129.
At those two events, both Silva and Machida ended their fights in astonishing fashion with different versions of the same kick—a front kick to the face—which both Black House fighters learned during their time training with Master Seagal.
The star of Law Man may not look like the same bad ass who whooped ass in Hard to Kill, but results don’t lie and apparently the martial arts training he took decades ago still applies even in today’s age of mixed martial arts.
As we saw at UFC 129 when Machida utilzed a kick seen in The Karate Kid to finish off Randy Couture, Seagal has seen it all and will have his fighter ready to dethrone the current 205-pound champion Jon Jones.
Expect Seagal to take full advantage of his nearly half-century-long martial arts career where he has learned everything there is to know about every martial art in the world. Master Seagal will teach his pupil these six techniques which will leave even the great Jon Jones in shock as Lyoto leaves UFC 140 with the UFC light heavyweight championship.
6. Jumping, Spinning Back-Kick to the Face
1 of 6Performer: Jean Claude Van Damme as “Frank Dux”
As made famous in: Bloodsport
This late-'80s classic fight movie was topped off by one of the most epic fight scenes in history as Frank Dux, portrayed by actor Jean Claude Van Damme, won in the final bout.
Van Damme leaped over his rolling opponent before landing a kick to the stomach followed by a ridiculous leaping, spinning kick to the mouth which sends the poor soul to the ground, unconscious.
5. Bicycle Kick
2 of 6Performer: Robin Shou as “Liu Kang”
As made famous in: Mortal Kombat
Liu Kang threw down his gravity-defying bicycle kick in the original Mortal Kombat movie.
Kang, a traditional martial artist, had been relying on pure fundamentals up until this point, but upped the stakes when the time was right. The dangerous Reptile character was unveiled and sent to take Kang out, but he answered with the bicycle kick heard ‘round the world.
Now it's time for Seagal to teach this brilliant kick to his pupil.
Machida wins... Fatality...
4. Thumb to the Eye
3 of 6Performer: Steven Seagal as “Casey Ryback”
As made famous in: Under Siege
Steven Seagal himself makes this list with one of his most famous bad-ass movie moments against Tommy Lee Jones in Under Siege.
After being threatened with a gun, Casey Ryback (played by Seagal) fights back and knocks the weapon out of his tormentor's hand. Both men grab knives and a quick battle with those takes place before Ryback goes Ric Flair on him with an eye poke. From there, a swift knife to the head ends what was a short, but intense fight.
Eye-gouges might be illegal in the UFC, but only if the referee sees them. Seagal is a master of trickery—the poor ref won't stand a chance at catching this one.
3. Backflip Kick
4 of 6Performer: Jaden Smith as “Dre Parker”
As made famous in: The Karate Kid (2010)
Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith starred as Dre Parker in 2010’s re-make of the classic The Karate Kid movie.
Smith, who was given little chance to win in the final fight, ended up landing one of the most insane kicks that has ever been recorded in film history when he quickly knocked out his opponent with a backflip kick that landed perfectly.
Lyoto Machida’s utilized the Crane Kick from the original Karate Kid movie to knock out Randy Couture in his most recent fight, so don’t be surprised to see him break out the finishing move from the new version of the movie, too.
2. Throat Rip
5 of 6Performer: Patrick Swayze as “Dalton”
As made famous in: Road House
What is it with these bad guys and always cheating in martial arts movies by pulling out guns during a hand-to-hand combat? It’s like they have no class at all—and Patrick Swayze wasn’t having any of it in the 1989 action film Road House.
Two years after he starred in Dirty Dancing, Swayze needed a character makeover and got the job done when he played ultra bad-ass Dalton in Road House. After knocking the gun out of his opponent’s hand with a kick, Dalton uses his bare hand to reach in and pull out the throat of the man who just tried to shoot him.
What a bad ass.
1. Five-Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique
6 of 6Performer: Uma Thurman as “The Bride”
As made famous in: Kill Bill: Volume 2
Brutally beaten and left for dead at the beginning of the first movie, The Bride vowed to get revenge on those who had wronged her, but mostly on the man who tried to murder her. It took two entire movies, but The Bride finally got her revenge when she murdered her ex-husband at the end of Kill Bill: Volume 2.
The Bride astonished her highly-skilled foe and, in a final act of courage, delivered an ancient, top-secret attack known as the “Five-Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique” which she learned while training with the legendary Pai Mei.
Though it would be frowned upon to stop a man’s hear in the Octagon, it might be exactly what Lyoto Machida needs to do in order to walk out of UFC 140 as the light heavyweight champion once again. Thankfully, he knows just the man to teach it to him: Steven Seagal.
After all, where do you think Pai Mei learned it?
