B.J. Penn vs. Nick Diaz
1 of 11Nick Diaz defeats B.J. Penn by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-27, 29-28).
In his return to the Octagon, Nick Diaz showed the UFC and MMA fans that he has been worth the trouble he caused leading into UFC 137. After a bloody and entertaining battle, Diaz was awarded the victory over former UFC champion B.J. Penn.
Penn started off with a strong first round, but he faded as many believed he might have against the frenetic pace of Diaz. Following the loss, Penn told UFC commentator Joe Rogan that he would be retiring, but we have heard Penn contemplate walking away from the sport in the past, so don't be surprised to see Penn return to the lightweight division.
For Diaz, the win validated his position as one of the top welterweights in the world. While he will still likely have to wait for the winner of a bout between Georges St-Pierre and Carlos Condit, Diaz showed that he is the most worthy contender to the welterweight crown.
Cheick Kongo vs. Matt Mitrione
2 of 11Cheick Kongo defeats Matt Mitrione by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-28, 29-28).
Matt Mitrione came up short in the biggest test of his MMA career, a bout with UFC veteran Cheick Kongo. Although the first two rounds were uneventful and closely-contested, Mitrione's takedown defense failed him in the third round.
Kongo's ground and pound in the final frame helped him ensure victory. With the win over Mitrione, Kongo is now undefeated in his past four fights, which puts him back in a position to start working his way toward the UFC title shot that has eluded him.
Although young in his MMA career, former NFL player Mitrione is 33 years old and doesn't have as much time to improve as other fighters of his experience would. Still, Mitrione has a lot of potential, so this loss could be a wake-up call for "Meathead."
Mirko Filipovic vs. Roy Nelson
3 of 11Roy Nelson defeats Mirko Filipovic by technical knockout (punches) at 1:30 of the third round.
At UFC 137, a much leaner Nelson stepped into the Octagon than MMA fans have become accustomed to. The new physique appeared to pay dividends for "Big Country," who earned a knockout victory over Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic.
Filipovic had Nelson in trouble during the second round, but Nelson was able to weather the storm and nearly finished his opponent from the crucifix position as the round came to an end. An excellent jiu-jitsu practitioner, Nelson's top game was too much for Filipovic and eventually resulted in the third-round finish.
For Filipovic, this third straight loss will likely lead to the end of a legendary career. Apologetic for his performances in the UFC, Filipovic was once considered one of the best fighters in the world while competing under the Pride banner.
Scott Jorgensen vs. Jeff Curran
4 of 11Scott Jorgensen defeats Jeff Curran by decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27).
Former collegiate wrestler Jorgensen used his base to remain undefeated in the UFC. With his hard-fought win over Curran, Jorgensen has now won seven of his last eight bouts, with his only loss during that time coming against UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz.
Curran was making his return to the Octagon for his first UFC fight since a bout with Matt Serra in January 2004. Heading into his fight with Jorgensen, Curran had won four of his past five fights. Despite the loss, the 34-year-old Curran was very competitive, threatening with submissions off of his back.
Since he has already lost to Cruz, it might take some luck for Jorgensen to earn another title shot in the bantamweight division. However, this win definitely puts Jorgensen on track to put himself back into the mix for a chance to earn that shot at the belt.
Hatsu Hioki vs. George Roop
5 of 11Hatsu Hioki defeats George Roop by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).
Making his UFC debut, highly-ranked featherweight Hatsu Hioki squeaked by with a split decision victory over George Roop at UFC 137. Hioki used takedowns from the clinch to make a case for winning the first two rounds, but the Japanese fighter faded in the final frame.
A former Shooto and Sengoku champion, Hioki was expected to contend for the featherweight title as soon as he joined the UFC. However, this lackluster victory may prove to be a setback more than a step in the right direction. Nonetheless, Hioki has only suffered one loss in his past 15 appearances.
Heading into this bout, Roop was looking for consecutive victories for this first time since March 2008. Roop turned it up in the third round, a round he clearly won, but it wasn't enough to overcome his somewhat slow start. Despite the loss, Roop remains a tough fight for most featherweights in the UFC.
Dennis Siver vs. Donald Cerrone
6 of 11Donald Cerrone defeats Dennis Siver by submission (rear naked choke) at 2:22 of the first round.
A winner of five straight fights, Cerrone made no secret that he planned on coming out and striking with Siver, a respected kickboxer. Despite Siver's kickboxing credentials, Cerrone rocked his opponent twice in the first round.
After knocking Siver down for a second time, Cerrone locked up a rear naked choke and forced Siver to tap. With the victory, Cerrone has now won six straight fights, while Siver saw a four-fight winning streak come to an end at UFC 137.
A win over Siver puts Cerrone into the mix for a lightweight title shot. Because of the depth of talent in the division, Cerrone will likely need a few more wins before that becomes a reality, but he is certainly within striking distance now.
Tyson Griffin vs. Bart Palaszewski
7 of 11Bart Palaszewski defeats Tyson Griffin by knockout (punches) at 2:45 of the first round.
Making his UFC and featherweight debuts, Bart Palaszewski may already be a contender in the 145-pound division, as he made quick work of veteran Tyson Griffin. Midway through the opening round, Griffin slipped a punch and rocked Griffin with a left hook.
After that, Palaszewski gave Griffin no chance to recover, as he unloaded a flurry of punches. Eventually, a right hook knocked Griffin to the canvas and brought a close to the bout. Palaszewski has now won five of his last six fights.
On the flip side, Griffin has lost in four of his past five performances. Though he will likely remain on the UFC roster because he won his previous bout against Manny Gamburyan, this performance leaves Griffin in a tough spot in his career.
Brandon Vera vs. Eliot Marshall
8 of 11Brandon Vera defeats Eliot Marshall by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
Released from the UFC after a loss to Thiago Silva, Vera was immediately welcomed back to the organization when it was discovered that Silva had cheated on his pre-fight drug test. With a decision victory over Marshall, Vera made the most of his second opportunity.
Vera had the advantage in striking and on the ground through the first two round, but a right hand from Marshall had Vera rocked in the final frame. Although he appeared to injure his arm while fighting off an armbar as the fight came to an end, Vera was able to survive until the final bell.
With the victory, Vera's UFC career can continue. Even though Marshall suffered his second straight loss, the exciting finish could earn him another fight with the organization.
Ramsey Nijem vs. Danny Downes
9 of 11Ramsey Nijem defeats Danny Downes by unanimous decision (30-25, 30-26, 30-27).
Ramsey Nijem was dominant in his first UFC fight as a lightweight. After losing to Tony Ferguson in the finals of a welterweight tournament on "The Ultimate Fighter," Nijem decided to return to his more natural weight class of 155 pounds.
Nijem found himself stuck in a crucifix early in the second round, but Downes made an ill-advised decision to give up the position. Aside from that situation, Nijem outgrappled Downes throughout the bout and surprisingly found some success in the striking department as well.
Downes showed a ton of heart, as he did in his UFC debut against Jeremy Stephens, but it wasn't enough. Downes was simply outmuscled by Nijem, so a move to 145 pounds should be the Roufusport fighter's next step if that is a possibility.
Chris Camozzi vs. Francis Carmont
10 of 11Francis Carmont defeats Chris Camozzi by unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27).
A training partner of Georges St-Pierre at Tristar Gym, middleweight Francis Carmont was impressive in his UFC debut. Showing off a well-rounded game, the 29-year-old Carmont picked up a sixth straight victory with his decision win over Camozzi.
Despite Camozzi's advantage in experience inside the Octagon, Carmont was simply too talented for for his opponent. Landing solid knees from the clinch and scoring takedowns whenever available, the physically-imposing Carmont was able to edge Camozzi in convincing fashion.
The 24-year-old Camozzi was making his return to the UFC after being released from the organization following a submission loss to Kyle Noke. A win over Joey Villasenor in his first post-UFC performance earned Camozzi another shot in the world's premier MMA organization, but with this being his second loss in three fights, Camozzi could be headed back to the regional circuit once again.
Dustin Jacoby vs. Clifford Starks
11 of 11Clifford Starks defeats Dustin Jacoby by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
A member of Arizona Combat Sports, a team known for training wrestlers like Ryan Bader, Starks used his right hand to set up takedowns in every round of his UFC debut. The 30-year-old Starks took his opponent to the canvas on each of his three takedown attempts at UFC 137.
By taking advantage of Jacoby's sub-par takedown defense, Starks remained undefeated in eight professional bouts. Meanwhile, Starks' victory meant the first loss of Jacoby's career, who was also fighting inside the Octagon for the first time.
The 23-year-old Jacoby was hesitant to engage throughout the fight, which made Starks increasingly confident in his ability to take the fight to the mat. Starks wasn't able to do much damage from the top position, but the victory ensures him a second appearance with the UFC, which may not be guaranteed for Jacoby.
