Around the Top 25: Saturday’s Late Results
Something hearty to start off your Sunday. Check out that Pitino video below, too.
–UPSET–Louisville 59, No. 6 Georgetown 51. It’s good to see that the Hoyas are just completely incapable of sparking a run when they’re trailing in the second half of a game. All of you should take notice of this fact when you fill out your brackets. Louisville outscored G’Town 36-20 in the final 20 minutes of play.
Ugly game. Just completely unappealing once Pitino got rid of the white.

–UPSET–Purdue 72, No. 8 Wisconsin 67. You know, I don’t write up these “Student Section Supports” pieces for nothing. *Throws arm out patting self on back*. The Boilers—yes, the Boilers!—are in control of the Big Ten with a 10-1 record and all the mo’ you could ask for.
They’ve now swept Wisconsin this season (I feel like a third game is coming in the B10 tourney) and have destiny in their back pocket. Robbie Hummel (right), who is not someone that has the look of a giant killer, is a freshman that has taken this team to new lands this season. E'Twaun Moore may be the most underrated freshman in the country.
Also, I saw a great stat: Wisky is 51-3 under Bo Ryan, after this loss, at the Kohl Center. Purdue, you’re officially on the good side of the bubble.
–No. 4 Kansas 100, Baylor 90. Hey, the Jayhawks are a better team than the Bears, but Baylor kept up with KU for this game, and you’ve certainly gotta take that if you’re a Baylor fan. Dropping 90 (57 coming in the second half) in Allen Fieldhouse? That hasn’t been done to Kansas in many a year. (If you can hunt down the last team that did it and send it to me, I’d love the info.) Kansas also hits the century mark for the first time in ‘07-’08. Darrell Arthur (the ‘Hawk that everyone forgets about) led the team with 23.
–No. 9 Stanford 71, Oregon State 56. Cardinal roll over Pac-10 doormat.
–No. 10 Butler 62, Wisconsin-Green Bay 57. Normally, nine steals will offset 39 percent shooting from the floor. Butler was normal, in that sense, Saturday night.
–No. 11 Michigan State 70, Northwestern 55. Of course I don’t get the Big Ten network, so I didn’t see any of this game, but if I’m to believe Doug Gottlieb—and who wouldn’t—Michigan State (now 20-3) is not in sync, and the Spartars are in for some big trouble soon.
–No. 15 Drake 73 Evansville 65. DRAKE HAS WON 21 IN A ROW. GOT TO LOVE THE DRAKE, JERRY.
–No. 20 Kansas State 72, Oklahoma State 58. K-State bludgeoned Okie State in this one. I watched it out of boredom, and in anticipation of Dickie V’s return to the Saturday night feature.
K-State is averaging better than 80/game and is a near lock for the tourney, as of now. Beastley has 19 double-doubles and will likely break ‘Melo’s frosh record of 22. It’s a shame—I wish he’d stay one more year for the game.
–No. 23 Vanderbilt 66, South Carolina 65. I won’t put the Commies in my Top 25 after this performance. More and more this team looks like one that was hot at the beginning of the year—with a manageable schedule and a little bit of good fortune—that won’t be nearly the type of team they were when they beat Washington State last March. Jermaine Beal hit a runner in the lane to save Vandy from the road loss. E-S-C-A-P-E.
Notable:
Arkansas 75, Mississippi 69. Tough game for Ole Miss on the road, but Arkansas is really impressing me lately. Last season, I didn’t buy the Hogs as a Tournament team (and they proved me right). This year, they’re a bit stronger and more astute defensively. I buy them completely right now.
George Washington 57, Dayton 54. GW has one of the top five dunks of the year in the game (see the video? I’ll try and have it up here soon) and also get a game-wining trey—who else—Wynton Witherspoon to knock off the suddenly victim-by-midnight Dayton Flyers. What’s worse for Dayton? This loss snaps a seven-game losing streak for the Colonials. Yeesh.
Oregon 92, California 70. The teams are now a combined 28-17—and both are 5-6 in Pac-10 play—so there’s not a whole lot that was sorted out by this game. If anything, it keeps Oregon off of its deathbed.
Villanova 72, Seton Hall 70. ‘Nova gets a game they absolutely needed, while Seton Hall fades into the background.
Maryland 84, North Carolina State 70. Terps are apparently for real (I guess), and the Wolfpack have all but played themselves out of the business of meaningful March play.
Texas-Pan American 90, N.J.I.T 64. The Crusaders are now a mah-velous 0-25!
