BCS Rankings: Oklahoma and Teams That Will Roar Back After Losses
The Oklahoma Sooners took a big hit to their title hopes in Week 8 after losing to Texas Tech, 41-38.
But they weren't the only ranked team that got upset.
Week 8 presented plenty of surprises that vastly changes college football's landscape.
Here are three teams I expect to roar back with a vengeance after Week 8 losses.
West Virginia (No. 25)
West Virginia dropped significantly in the AP poll after falling to Syracuse on Saturday, 49-23.
There is certainly some concern, given the Mountaineers have been rocked by the good offenses they have faced (Maryland, LSU), but they are a better team than they showed in Week 8.
West Virginia's only chance at a BCS spot now is if they win the Big East. Week 9's matchup against Big East-leading Rutgers is huge and could be the swing game for the Mountaineers.
West Virginia will have trouble stopping receiver Mohamed Sanu in Week 9, but I think the Mountaineers' offense will be more trouble for Rutgers in the long run. Rutgers has yet to face an offense like West Virginia's.
Wisconsin (No. 15)
Wisconsin had a chance to jump ahead of Boise State in Week 8 after the Broncos' underwhelming performance against Air Force, but the Badgers responded by losing to then-No. 16 Michigan State, 37-31.
Nonetheless, I still consider Wisconsin to be an elite squad in college football, led by quarterback Russell Wilson, receiver Nick Toon and a strong running game.
And, don't forget, the Badgers lost on a Hail Mary pass in the final seconds after coming back from a 14-point deficit.
Wisconsin will dominate Ohio State in Week 9.
Oklahoma (No. 9)
All this time I was thinking that the LSU-Alabama game on Nov. 5 would determine who would face Oklahoma in the BCS Championship Game.
Well, Oklahoma still has a chance to get back in the discussion, but it's looking less likely now.
Oklahoma's defensive performance against Texas Tech in Week 8 was simply hard to believe. They came into the game giving up less than 16 points per game and were generally considered one of the top defenses in college football.
But giving up 572 total yards at home? Wow.
I'm not taking anything away from Texas Tech, but I have to think Week 8 was a fluke for this defense. It simply has too much talent and is too well-coached.
Expect Oklahoma to defeat No. 8 Kansas State and No. 16 Texas A&M the next two weeks.
