Chris Johnson, Tennessee Titans Lay an Egg Against Houston Texans

Chad MintonOct 23, 2011

Let the finger pointing begin if you're a Tennessee Titans fan after watching them get completely outplayed for the second-straight game.

This time it came to the tune of a 34-point loss Houston Texans.

It was an all-around bad effort by the entire team, but you can't let Chris Johnson slip through the cracks anymore. He's played horrible for 99 percent of this season. The Titans have three wins despite of Johnson, not because of him.

He has rushed for less than 25 yards in three of his six games this season and has only eclipsed 60 yards rushing once.

You don't even have to look at Johnson's stat line to understand how bad he is performing this season. You be the judge and look at the footage for yourself.

There were numerous instances against Houston when Johnson looked soft and without any confidence.

The biggest example was when Johnson bobbled a reception on a crossing route because he took his eyes off the ball to prepare for the hit. That bobble prevented him from getting into space and giving the Titans a big gain.

He's doing this at the line of scrimmage as well. Johnson is going down upon first contact virtually every time he touches the ball.

Johnson was nearly last in the NFL in rushing yards after contact heading into Week 7, and he'll plummet even more after his performance against the Texans.

All may not be lost after today's pathetic performance by the Titans, but rockier roads are ahead if Johnson doesn't climb over this hurdle.

The Titans are way too young at wide receiver to afford going for all of these third-and-long situations. Johnson has to start getting three or four yards on first down to set up the offense.

When Kenny Britt was available early in the season, the Titans could get away with Johnson not contributing to the run game. But Britt isn't coming back and this team has to figure something out now.

The schedule gets very challenging after Indianapolis next week. The Titans will have to deal with two rookie quarterbacks who are performing very well in Cam Newton and Andy Dalton.

Then they still have to deal with rest of the NFC South, New Orleans, Tampa Bay and Atlanta.

Maybe it's time for Mike Munchak to begin experimenting with Javon Ringer and Jamie Harper on a more consistent basis to see if that shakes things up a bit.

Don't hit the panic button just yet, but keep it nearby in case Johnson continues this tailspin. Their successes and failures in 2011 are directly linked to Johnson and his hefty contract.
