BCS Rankings: Michigan State and the Biggest Climbers of the Week

Rob GoldbergOct 23, 2011

Few teams in college football have proven more in the past two weeks than Michigan State.

The Spartans were as low as No. 23 in the AP Poll two weeks ago before the battle with rival Michigan. Two home games against undefeated opponents loomed and it was time for Michigan State to step up to be taken seriously.

The Spartans will now be taken seriously.

A 28-14 win over Michigan set up a prime-time battle with No. 6 Wisconsin. Michigan State did not disappoint, as it came through with a last-second touchdown pass to upset the Badgers.

Now fans have seen their team rise in the rankings to the Top 10 in the Coaches' Poll. With some help from the computer polls the Spartans will jump into the Top 10 in the BCS as well, a pretty impressive leap from No. 16 a week ago.

Michigan State was not the only impressive team last week. There were several schools ready to make a big climb in this week's BCS rankings.

Kansas State did a good job of remaining undefeated, winning a not-so-tough road game at Kansas. Still, with every win the Wildcats silence more critics and change voters minds. The team rose four spots in the Coaches' Poll this week, and the computer numbers have been kind to the Big 12 this season.

With Oklahoma coming to town followed by a road game at Oklahoma State, this might be the highest rankings the Wildcats see all season.

The most shocking rise this week might come from Arizona State. The Sun Devils did not play this weekend after losing a tough game at Oregon the week before.

Luckily due to teams losing in front of them, Arizona rose five spots in the Coaches' Poll and should find themselves in the BCS rankings for the first time this week.

The numbers have been mixed on the Pac-12 so far, but impressive wins by the league's two great teams, Stanford and Oregon, will surely create a boost for the overall impression of the conference.

There is still plenty of football left to be played, but these few teams are moving in the right direction as the season progresses.
