Winners and Losers from College Football Week 8

John RozumOct 22, 2011

Obviously there's winners and losers based on the scoreboard each week.

But, we're gonna get a whole lot more creative than just numbers, because picking "winners" and "losers" from multiple angles in the game of football only adds to the excitement.

So with that said, here are some winners and losers from Week 8 in college football.

Winner: Tajh Boyd, QB (Clemson)

1 of 10

He's a sophomore and a first year starter in the Clemson football program, but Tajh Boyd is absolutely shredding opposing defenses.

Boyd has thrown 24 TDs—to only three picks—in eight games, and he has also ran for another four.

On Saturday against ACC rival North Carolina, Boyd threw for five TDs, ran for a sixth, tossed for 367 yards and did not throw one pick.

This was also the second straight week where Clemson scored over 50 points. And Boyd has spread the rock around to five targets with ten or more receptions on the year.

Freshman WR Sammy Watkins is by far his favorite target, but it's just that—he's a freshman. Watch out for this combo dominating college football for the immediate future.

Loser: Jace Michael Lankow

2 of 10

You can't be a "winner" when you go to jail afterward, but it was still a fresh new way to sneak onto the field.

Coming out in the referee uniform was slick, and blowing the whistle to stop the game was epic. Unfortunately, the consequences may only get worse for Jace Michael Lankow, so the real question is whether or not this stunt was worth it.

In an article by Anthony Gimino of The Arizona Republic, Lankow may be in too deep:

"

"He was led off the field in handcuffs and charged with a class-six felony, which means he’s facing a maximum of a year-and-a-half in jail if he has no previous felony convictions."

"

The stunt was great, but in the aftermath, is spending 18 months in prison worth the two minutes of fame?

Winner: Arizona State Sun Devils, Pac-12 South

3 of 10

USC is still ineligible, and the Arizona-UCLA brawl only puts them even further on the back-burner, while Colorado and Utah are just plain terrible.

Thus leaving the Pac-12 South to the Arizona State Sun Devils, who, despite being on a bye this week, should just be handed the Pac-12 South title.

In addition, if you're an Arizona State fan, you had to have enjoyed watching rival Arizona get some suspensions for the fight against UCLA.

Loser: Mississippi Football Fans

4 of 10

Whether you're a fan of the Ole Miss Rebels or Mississippi State Bulldogs, this wasn't a good weekend.

For one, the Bulldogs were on a bye, and the Rebels squandered off a 17-0 lead against Arkansas to lose 29-24.

So really, heading into this week, the State of Mississippi's only choice was to watch/root for the Ole Miss Rebels. Ouch.

And it's gonna be a while before either schools does anything in the SEC West.

Winner: Mike Stoops, Former Arizona Head Coach

5 of 10

You are Mike Stoops on Oct. 11, 2011, right after you got fired.

Bummer.

Now you are Mike Stoops on Oct. 21, 2011, right after the Arizona-UCLA brawl.

Laughing while you roll in your $1.4-million buy-out cash.

Just ask your brother Bob at Oklahoma if you can get a job as a special teams coordinator or something.

Loser: Anyone Named Ron Zook

6 of 10

Not sure how common the name "Ron Zook" is, but it's quickly losing relevance during the 2011 college football season.

The most famous Ron Zook, current head football coach at Illinois started his 2011 season 6-0. Now they're 6-2 and just lost to the Purdue Boilermakers.

If you know anyone named Ron Zook give them sympathy, because the Ron Zook who's coaching at Illinois should be back on the hot-seat as the Illini were significantly overrated when they were 6-0.

Not a bad Halloween idea either.

Show up wearing Illinois gear, but tell everyone your coming and that your costume is going to be a huge hit at the party. Then ultimately fail and disappoint before it's even halfway over.

Winner: Bill Snyder's Special Teams

7 of 10

It's the area of football that can be easily taken for grant it, but Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder knows otherwise.

Once again the Wildcats returned a kickoff back for a TD, and perhaps it was the gut-punching moment for the Kansas Jayhawks because it happened right after halftime.

The Wildcats were up 31-14 at the half, and then freshman Tyler Lockett made it 38-14 at the blink of an eye.

Elsewhere, Snyder's special teams have come up vehemently big, as evidence by the Texas Tech game where they blocked two field goals and Lockett also returned a kick back for a TD.

And if you watched the Oklahoma-Texas game, you know that if there's a weakness on the No. 3 BCS-ranked Sooners, special teams is just that.

Therefore, don't sleep on the Wildcats when they host Oklahoma next week.

Loser: Colorado's Scoreboard

8 of 10

Yeah that picture may be from a game against the Missouri Tigers when the Buffaloes were in the Big 12, but I'm sure Colorado fans wish those days were back.

On Saturday the Oregon Ducks came into Boulder, CO. and defeated the Buffaloes 49-2.

The scary thing was that Oregon played without starting QB Darron Thomas or RB LaMichael James.

After the first quarter Colorado found themselves down 29-0, and they only got the safety thanks to a boneheaded play by the Ducks' punt returner Cliff Harris.

The Colorado Rockies of MLB could have put up more than two points this week. All they'd have to do is knock a three-run homer and the Buffaloes would be outscored.

It's going to be a long time before Colorado does anything in the Pac-12 South.

Winner: Al Golden, Miami Hurricanes Head Coach

9 of 10

After all the stuff that went on in the Miami Hurricane's football program before Al Golden got there, it was uncertain as to how the 2011 season would play out.

Well, Mr Golden has done a great job of preventing this historic program from a catastrophic breakdown.

The 'Canes got a big win today over the No. 21-BCS ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and now have a 4-3 (2-2) record.

With four ACC games and five games left overall, Miami could very well finish 9-3 as all are winnable games.

Not to mention, had it not been for a close losses to Virginia Tech and Kansas State, the Hurricanes could have been a great as 11-1.

Golden has the 'Canes headed back in the right direction, and it will be interesting how the program turns out in 2012.

Loser: Aubie the Tiger

10 of 10

On Saturday the Auburn Tigers got completely annihilated by the No. 1-BCS ranked LSU Tigers 45-10.

It was a game of Alpha-Tiger Supremacy (if that exists) in the SEC West, but the Bayou Bengals and Mike the Tiger straight up dominated.

Plus, Mike the Tiger for LSU is a real Tiger, unlike Aubie who's clearly not.

Therefore, I'm taking LSU and Mike the Tiger every time these two school's face off, because real Tigers make a better mascot.

In addition, that 45-10 beat-down avenges the loss to Cam Newton last season.

Sorry Aubie, but the Bayou Bengals ate you alive in Baton Rouge, LA. on Saturday.
