BCS Rankings: Why Undefeated Kansas State and Stanford Will Fall in Week 9

Kyle VassaloOct 23, 2011

Oklahoma's national championship hopes went down the tubes yesterday with their shocking loss to Texas Tech. While they've got no shot at a BCS title, given the absurd amount of undefeated teams still remaining in the mix, they have a chance to play spoiler in Week 9 when they take on undefeated Kansas State.

It's going to be a gruesome outing that torches Kansas State's hopes of running the table. The Sooners still have a shot at winning the Big 12, and they aren't about to collect back-to-back losses and fall even further down the rankings.

Kansas State won't be the only undefeated team to fall, though. Here are the undefeated teams who are going to be upset in Week 9.

Kansas State

The Wildcats have gone from virtually unknown to an undefeated sleeper pick, making noise on the national scene. They took down Baylor, Miami, Missouri and the Texas Tech team that beat Oklahoma, but the thick of their schedule still lies ahead of them.

Oklahoma's defense let them down against Texas Tech. They surrendered four touchdowns through the air and even Landry Jones' five-touchdown performance wasn't enough to keep pace with Texas Tech.

Kansas State has been white hot, but they score an average of 33.6 PPG and shouldn't expect to see the porous Sooners defense that took the field in Week 8. No team even came within a single-digit margin of OU prior to Texas Tech and as long as their defense doesn't let Collin Klein take over the game, a Sooners team eager for redemption will walk away with the win.

Stanford

People are looking at Oregon as Stanford's toughest matchup, but going on the road and taking on Matt Barkley and the Trojans poses the biggest trap game imaginable for the undefeated Cardinal.

Stanford hasn't encountered a single team worth mentioning, and an overrated Washington team was no match for Andrew Luck and Stanford.

All of that is about to change when Luck and Barkley square off in a battle between two potential top five picks. Barkley and Luck have both thrown for nine touchdowns and one pick in their last three games. Both of these quarterbacks are going to bring it, and their offsetting elite production means this game will be decided elsewhere.

Stanford isn't the type of team to be caught sleeping, but their defense is going to be tested like it hasn't been tested all season long. USC has battled through tight games routinely this season and with their home crowd behind them, they're going to pull off a narrow upset at home.
