WWE News: Vince McMahon Has a Weird Love/Hate Relationship with the Divas

Imaan JalaliOct 21, 2011

I think we all had a sneaking suspicion over the years that Vince McMahon's mindset pushes the boundaries of normalcy.

As one of the vanguard impresarios in Americana, McMahon has taken a path nobody but him traveled before.

By the same token, he's done it with a panache and unique style characteristic of a man who ruthlessly rose to the apex of his profession—the wonderful world of professional wrestling.

Without such attributes—the good and the bad—wrestling would not have benefited from a global expansion, an evolution of characters, a vast archive of footage and, most importantly of all, mainstream penetration.

Without the inculcation of wrestling into the TV marketplace, we the fans would be deprived of arguably some of the most versatile performers in entertainment— both male and female.

From Hulk Hogan, to Steve Austin, to The Rock and John Cena, WWE's business model has been predicated on the masculine heroes who've proudly carried the batons for their respective eras.

On the underbelly of pro wrestling, however, exists a more feminine slant on the usual violence-driven product featuring women who also take out their aggression in the ring.

Compared to their male counterparts, though, the "divas," as they're now branded, have failed to not only garner similar reactions when performing, but have rarely spiked business—the bottom line.

Yet, statistics for both Monday Night Raw and Friday Night Smackdown reveal female fans make up more than 30 percent of the total viewership.

These seemingly contradictory factors with respect to the divas have spun the chairman into a Jekyll and Hyde frenzy.

For instance, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, McMahon, on one hand, feels compelled to feature at least one divas segment on every broadcast in order to satisfy the female demographic.

On the flip side—pun intended—he will nearly always transform into a state of helpless panic from his usual seat backstage while watching the divas "entertain" on the monitor.

McMahon gets so overwrought in regards to the pointlessness of it all—which includes divas wrestling, talking or just plain existing on television—he will uncontrollably urge Michael Cole to lampoon, ignore and effectively undermine the divas on the air.

One would think Vince with all his reputed "genius" would realize how self-prophetic and ultimately futile the divas division has become due to his indecisiveness.

If TNA can make their women matter, there's no reason why WWE—a Goliath with equal-sized resources—can't.
