UCLA vs. Arizona: Benches Clear as UCLA Gets Blown out
If the Rick Neuheisel era was ever going to end, this would be the perfect signal that it should.
The UCLA Bruins have been mired with shoddy play and a lack of direction. On Thursday, both culminated with a lack of composure that sullied an already atrocious outing.
By the half, the UCLA Bruins were getting their jerseys handed to them in more ways than one. The Arizona Wildcats were beating them 42-7, and that was the most sane item of the first half.
What started as a fan posing as a referee being chased off the field turned into a bench-clearing brawl. The officials attention was drawn for a few moments when a streaker came onto the field.
That is when the players began jawing at one another leading to pushing, shoving and then a bevy of punches. The benches cleared and an already messy game became a whole lot more ugly.
Bret McMurphy had the perfect sentiment on how the game was going for the Bruins up until that point. The CBS reporter tweeted what we were all thinking.
It's clear that Neuheisel has not only lost the ability to command a working strategy, he has lost his ability to instill focus into his team.
While Arizona is just as culpable in this mess, they are the ones rolling on the field just a week removed from having their head coach Mike Stoops fired.
The Bruins looked sloppy and ineffective all game, and then something crazy happened to blow it all up. There is little hope that they can figure it all out after the half.
It seems an era of underachieving may have come to an end. There is no way of knowing what the program thinks of such a display on national TV, but it can't be good.
Unless Neuheisel has his men ready for a stirring second-half comeback, he may have just seen an ugly nail in his UCLA coffin.
