49ers-Jets: Hill Shines, 49ers Pound Jets, 24-14

Obviously it is too little too late, but the San Francisco 49ers, in their game Sunday against the New York Jets, may have perhaps put together their best 60-minute effort to date under coach Mike Singletary.

A lot it had to do with quarterback Shaun Hill, as he exploited the Jets secondary and throwing for a pair of touchdowns, as he led San Francisco to an impressive 24-14 win over New York at Monster Park.

The 49ers started out in fine fashion albeit in an odd manner as Hill threw a pass to wide receiver Jason Hill who caught the ball, then was tackled hard. He would fumble the reception but offensive tackle Joe Staley would recover the ball in the end zone, resulting in a touchdown, giving the 49ers an early 7-0 lead.

The Jets would tie the game midway through the second quarter when Brett Favre ran the ball in from two-yards out, but San Francisco would increase their lead to 14-7 on a four-yard Hill-to-Frank Gore TD pass with 46 ticks left in the first half.

The Jets would tie the game again on a 17-yard run by Thomas Jones at the 5:24 mark of the third quarter; however, the final quarter would be all San Francisco as kicker Joe Nedney would kick a 32-yard field goal 16 seconds into the final period along with another TD pass—this time from Hill to WR Bryant Johnson with 6:05 remaining. The 49ers would fend off the Jets the rest of the way.

Hill had arguably his best game this season as he went 28-of-39 for 285 yards with two TDs and an INT while Jets QB Brett Favre basically stunk, going 20-of-31 for 137 yards and an INT. Frank Gore led all 49ers rushers with 52 yards on 14 carries while catching three passes for 13 yards and a score while Jones led the Jets rushing attack with 56 yards and a TD.

Isaac Bruce led the 49ers receivers with six catches for 70 yards, while Johnson caught six for 49 yards and a TD; Chansi Stuckey led the Jets receivers with four receptions for 43 yards. San Francisco (5-8) plays again next Sunday as they play in Miami against the Dolphins while New York (8-5) returns home to play the Buffalo Bills in a key divisional matchup - also next Sunday.
